Hi mummies
Just wanna share my experience with LCentral.
My boy attended its Launchpad & then LiftOff at K2 2yrs ago. Now at p2, his spelling is a breeze and his reading is excellent, according to his school teacher.
I had put him at I Can Read and Lcentral concurrently and I chosen the latter after 1 term, reason being:
1) He cried at ICR as teacher too stern and fierce to him, he said.
2) He advanced to K2 level (LiftOff) earlier than in ICR (they name their level differently)
3) I am impressed with the material at LC
4) Most importantly, the support from the manager and teacher is the key factor to my boy successfully completed the course.
My opinion is both centres' materials are good. The one extra benefit I noticed from my boy advancement in p1 and p2 is that he also pick up comprehension skills from LiftOff at LC. Hence I never need to coach him in this area.
Important point to note is the teacher chemistry with your kids. Even within LC, I had changed from 1 branch to another due to a very rude teacher at Tampines branch and the very tense feelings at this centre. Bedok branch give us a warm feeling. I refused to give up LC even though my boy is still at ICR at that point as I am really impressed with the structured way and the usage of comprehension to teach phonics at LC.
I am one who is able to understand basic/ elementary and even intermediate phonics and their rules and had seen and had materials from ICR, LC and Kentridge as my kid was enrolled to these 3 school before. So I had my preference on phonics teaching.
To benefit fully from this LiftOff, i believe parents need to do just some simple revision with the kids to understand what the kids cannot apprehend in each lesson, and quickly seek teachers' clarifications.
Hope this helps.
Hi wondermoms,
Thank you so much for sharing your experience with LC.Just last week I put my two children dd P4 and ds p1 in LC jurong east. They went through assessment and p4 is going to join PSLE prep program for p4-5.
But for my son P1,I am bit concerned. They put him in liftoff program cuz according to teacher he couldn't read all high frequency sight words BUT my concern is he is already in p1 then spending 9 months on this program how he will cope with the rest of course like compre, grammar, vocab etc etc in school exams??
Teacher who took assessment was also saying that he himself is bit confused cuz my son in on the edge of being taken for success 1 or lift off.Teacher himself told that he may be well ahead of other students in his class for liftoff but we still suggest to put him in liftoff!
I agreed and started him with liftoff,he will be having his first lesson next week but I am still confused wether I have done right decision to let him start with liftoff at P1 or just was that better to put him directly into success 1( accor to his class level)
Would be lovely to see mommies comments on it:)

Hi Nahiz
Would Lcentral allow your child to switch between levels before a term ends?? Maybe can observe first. After a few lessons then decide if he should continue in liftoff or switch to success? -

Perhaps u can look thru the liftoff book, then u can hv a rough idea of what will be covered in the course, whether it is just nice for your boy to build up his foundation or too easy for him that might kill his interest.
I have a colleague, the dd english is not very good, hence, when she sent her to ICR, she also went thru the preliminary level to build up her foundation.
How about phonics? can he blends well?
for Sight words, i thought it can be memorize or can be improved by reading? i don't know. Just my 2 cents! -
just to add, the dd of my cols went thru preliminary level though she already in P1.

Hi Butterwaffles and ck0917,
No they don’t let to change in their liftoff program according to my knowledge, not even after a term. That’s why I am concerned cuz they told once your child has taken this program he has to finish it completely( 33 classes I think)
Ck0917 I feel relieved after reading about your friends child,Infact I checked their liftoff books, they are OK not very easy but would not be hard for my son I guess.
I have done different reader books with him at home like The Fitzroy readers(book1-20)Peter and Jane ,I can read and other story books and he can read up to level 2 for 7-9 years old story books(he is 6 years old, year end child in P1). I don’t know why poor he got nervous or what in front of their male teacher for assessment that he done mistakes in reading those words which he fluently reads in front of me at home!!! But I should admit that he is not good in trying to spell words on his own, rather he memorize them.
So I am still on fence wether I done right decision or wrong as customer service staff told me that as now you paid and registered for liftoff there is no way to change it or move to higher level in the middle of course, you have to complete it.
Mommies if I am wrong please correct me as I am totally new to LCentral, above info is what I received during doing admission for my children last week:) -
Hmmm. Actually I am also considering to send my 4yo boy for assessment but because so far I have been teaching him on my own and now he is able to sound out simple 3 letter words and common sight words like the, on, in, of, has, had, have etc…so he can read those simple pphonics readers on his own. But I don’t know how to progress from here already…and send him fot assessment also problem as he might not be willing to show the teacher what he is capable of. If he cant show then they cant assess him and he might end up in an unsuitable programme.
Nahiz, I remember reading some parents’ comments that the teachers feedback that their kids are ready for the next level or something so I thought can proceed to the next level when the child is ready…if cannot change its 33 lessons! -
Yes, u can proceed to other program, but not for lift off, i was told that we can’t even change the teacher / class, once u hv confirm, that is, the reason told was that every teacher will have diff teaching plan & maybe at diff pace.
But before the class commerce, i think it is fair for us to change our mind.
Again, parents will need to decide, what is more suitable for your kids.
Nahiz, do you prefers your kids to memorize those words or prefer them to know how to blend them & spell them out? what is your priority? maybe u can look at the overall objective for liftoff vs success 1 then u decide what shd be the best for your child.
If u decide to proceed with liftoff, & u afraid he might "lose out" since he already in P1 & by right u shd let him go sucess 1, maybe u can find more external source like exam paper, work book to guide him yourself.
Alternatively, if you want him to go to sucess 1 instead, but u still want him to blend well etc, then u might want to reinforce him in these areas again by other ways. -
My girl started with lift off late last year, she can read sight words well just that blending may need some improvement, ( spelling in her cc was s breeze for her n she likes reading on her own)her level was somewhat stucked in between lift off n psf, the teacher recommended to build up her foundation so I decided to sign up e 33 liftoff class, she will be taking her last term soon n only start sucess 1 ard July this year( she’s p1 this year) actually my concern for her was her grammar n sentence construction n I thought it would be more beneficial if she starts with success 1, bt I do coach her on my own n let her do assessment books dealing with grammar vocabulary etc, it would be gd to think thru which area ur child really needs help with since it’s a 3 terms course
