thanks gaagaa
i had the same reservation as u, which is why i didnt sign up for ICR after the assessment last mth, cos they wanted him to go for ICR prelim whc is still phonics. i wanted more no p1 prep course n exploring whr LCentral will be diff if he can be allowed to join the PSS course after assessment tmr. my boy already k1, next yr k2. seems a bit late like that. -
Hi 24hr-mum,
How’s the assessment? I believe LC will ask you to enrol ur child in the 33 weeks LiftOff course rather than the P1 prep course since there is still 1 more year before P1. I don’t think it’s too late (as compared to my situation) and even if you were to enrol into LiftOff programme, your child will still be promoted to the P1 prep programme after 33 weeks before he enters P1. -
hi gaagaa
i m so surprised that the teacher say my boy can join PFS(prepare for sch). 2 mths ago, i did assessment at ICR, was asked to join ICR prelim class to learn the phonics!
the PFS is the usual grammar, vocab, compo, oral, compre class. not phonics class.
i m pleased wif the assessment n prob will sign up. -
Hi 24hr-mum
I’m just like you, were surprised that my boy can join PFS class. Before hand, I was hoping he could go to liftoff as I would like him to hv a good base on phonics, I tink it is important. But since they hv graded him at PFS, I’ll just let him try. He will start his class in Jan 2011.
I’ll let u know how his progress.
Thanks

Hi 24-hr mum,
I feel soooo happy for you. Good then, at least that's what you want for your child unlike my situation. My girl keep complaining too easy in the LiftOff class for her and every lesson, she has to wait for the other 2 children who are much slower in reading. The teacher also does not give any feedback to me after every lesson but only talk to the slower child's parent. I just feel the Lift Off programme is not suitable for her and guess it's just my luck. But anyway, I'm glad this Friday is her last lesson in LC and I'm praying hard that the next school she's going would be much much better

Hi both GSK and 24hr-mum, just a word of caution. Pls ensure the teacher that is taking ur child's class is NOT new. This is my personal bad encounter TWICE!!! I always tell myself to give new comers a chance with assurance from the school but the outcome is always bad
My child's teacher is new and her essence is hard to listen, even my child complain that. And they didn't know she is pregnant when they employ her. So she's going to be due in 4 mths time before she can finish the Lift Off programme. Very disrupting but no choice

Is your boy a independent reader? I know they emphasize on this but I am wondering what level of independent reading they are looking at. What do they test on? common sight words or funny phonics combinations?
I also have a K1. She has already learnt 1.5 yrs of phonics. She is moving to advanced level (6 more months) to go. In the meantime, I also put her to LW Creative english where it's more like a reading program. So she know the common sight words but she is still working on blending as it doesn't come naturally. I've to remind her/ help her. So I am wondering if I should send her for assessment now. She is K2 next so I definitely want something more academic before P1.
I am thinking if I should think about that from term 3 2011..... but only 6 more months to go. If I do so, by then she has completed her advanced phonics and I will stop her LW. -

Hi Gaagaa
Thanks for your advise. Yes, you are right, teachers play an important role and getting a good teacher that suits your child is another luck. Next year is an important year, we have been switching from one school to another, hoping I won't change another school.
Just my opinion, I find tat is not too late to start PFS in April / May after completing the Liftoff.
Wish us all the best to have a suitable classes for your DD and my DS.
Thanks, gsk. -
hi gaagaa
thanks. i will chk if the teacher is new or not.
i was thinking LC phonics might be easy, or rather can self teach, that is why when i sent him to LC at 4yo, i didnt sign up cos they want him go some phonic class which childcare also teach but slower.
if ur girl finds it easy, voice to the teachr to re-assess and move on the PFS faster.
for icr, they also want me go phonics (icr prelim, not even icr bk) so i didnt sign up
hi MMM
my boy can read independently but he by default will not take a book to read. by default is see pictures only, play cars. i got to sit wif him n ask him to read.
in this aspect - can any parent show wf me when do their kids esp boys read by themselves wfout being asked to? i mean read the words, read story bks. my girl reads herslf at k2.
re the test, for iCR is test on phonic sounds - first sounds etc and funny words that are not real but are made up by phonics. for LC, they ask him read entire passage, supp to be their p1 level, and also some sight words. maybe that is why he pass the test cos his sight words are gd but not really the decoding.
