DD is 3+ YO. Started Foundations with LC in mid Aug 11. Any ide how long it will take her to progress to the next level?

Hi Zuen,

The best person to ask is probably your gal’s teacher….but you can probably gently ‘push’ the teacher to do assessment on your kid when you think she is ready….sometimes, not all teachers are so proactive in wanting to access the child, as she may feels that she is still young and give her more time to enjoy learning…but as a parent, you will probably know better if your child already knows what she should know in the course and is ready to move on…sometimes it’s a thin line between taking a slower pace and keeping the child adequately challenged to keep the interest going.

That is the problem. I have no idea what is the difference between what is being taught in the Foundation class and Launchpad and no idea how long she should stay in the Foundation class to be deemed as the norm.
Does she has to finish the entire workbook before she is deemed as ready?

I think only the teacher can answer this. I heard that some kids who are assessed may not be 100% ready for current level. So the teacher proposed doing the last few parts of the level before. They may not be required to do the entire level just the last few parts before they move to current level.

For Foundation and Lauchpad, no need to finish the booklets and some kids also do not start on Book 1 i.e. start with Book 2 or 3 straight away. My understanding is that Launchpad goes into blending and segmentation, as well as decoding a word to be able to hear the first/middle/last sounds etc. The teacher will play phonics games with the children and each child will have his/her own turn at answering the question. I think the most basic requirement to move on to Launchpad is to know the single sounds very well, and of course, the teacher should feel that the child has relatively good attention span to be able to participate in the Launchpad activities/games. Since you are posing the question of moving on, do you feel that your child is bored with Foundation, or is she able to read simple words and thus you feel she is beyond the Foundation program?

Actually, I did speak to the teacher after the last lesson and the teacher commented that DD should be ready to move on to Launchpad this coming January. Just that I was wondering if there is a norm, a yardstick that I can use to measure DD’s progress. Looks like there probably isnt. DD is enjoying herself and looking forward to going to her phonics class, which is definitely a plus point. The mummy on the other hand is of course hoping that she moves up soon so that it is less painful on the pocket.

Is your DD able to write and sound all the alphabets? I'm just wondering whether the child MUST know how to write the alphabets before going to the launchpad. And I'm asking because my ds (3yo) can sound most of the letters but he doesn't know how to write.
