Kumon - Discussion

you can break up the calculations into parts first: (for eg.)
1/3 - 5/20 + 4/20 - 7/42 + 6/42
= 14/42 - 1/20 - 1/42
= 13/42 - 1/20
= 130/420 - 21/420
= 109/420 -
I started my girl on kumon math 1 yr plus ago. My main intent was to improve her focus and concentration. She progressed well and has recently cleared their bronze Level i.e. she is said to be 6 mths ahead of her peers at K2 level.
However, the workload has become very heavy of late and it is also very different from the modelling method the kids are going to learn in pri schools. Every night she has 2-3 sets of kumon work to do. We always have to rush home to complete and its becoming very tough.
My daughter can do straight forward addition, deletion and multiplications but when i ask her to solve sample question from P1 assessment books, she struggles because she needs to read, understand the question and apply the concept.
I will probably stop kumon when she enters pri 1 and focus more on the actual syllabus instead. Just my thoughts. -
pris-tan:
I will do it this way,1/3 - 1/4 + 1/5 - 1/6 + 1/7
need to find the LCM first
1/3 - 1/4 + 1/5 - 1/6 + 1/7
=(4*5*6*7-3*5*6*7+3*4*6*7-3*4*5*7+2*4*5*6)/(3*4*5*6*7)
I always tell my dd to get the same denominator first, She will be in P3 next year. -
Kumon is ok at the beginning. My child has been using Kumon for a while. It helped my child in math calculation skills. But over time, the benefit is no longer that visible and we feel more pressure on its monthly bills. Then we accepted the advice from our neighbor, and started to do the worksheets on Beestar (http://www.beestar.org). To my surprise, she loves the 10 quick questions very much and it really helps kids thinking. Plus, I also don’t have to drive her to kumon. Maybe you also can have a try.
Plus, schellen, NICE :celebrate:

Has any mummies here sent your kids for Kumon Chinese? My boy is in P2 now and I hv sent him there since beginning of P1. However I am quite bothered by the amount of repetition that they have to go through. To me it’s just the exposure of the different types of passages that I am looking forward to, however I seem to be wasting money getting repeated worksheets owe and. Over again.
Any comments from mummies who hv experience in the kimono Chinese syllabus? Is it good for kids comprehension at primary school level? Pls help. -
I went to the Hougang Central branch planning to register my daughter but I was told by one of the ladies there sitting at the reception that the main instructor was not around and I had to go for a session with the instructor to learn more about how Kumon works. So she hastily took down my number and name (I don’t know but the way she talked to me, it feels like "brushing" me off. No sense of friendliness or whatsoever) and told me she would pass my details for the instructor to revert. It was Wednesday when I went but been waiting for almost 4 days now but still no one call.
I’m just wondering is this how Kumon works? -
anyone has tried Kumon english or chinese at Novena branch, under Principal Josephine ? how is feedback ?

Not sure Kumor is suitable for my P3 DD or not...
At P3, my suggestion is to put your DD in a programme that is according to MOE syllabus. For math, try to find a programme that train the child in heuristic problem solving skills. These types of questions is going to get more and more weightage in upper primary. Kumon do not have these types of training. -

I fully agree with you. MOE math focus is very different from Kumon.I started my girl on kumon math 1 yr plus ago. My main intent was to improve her focus and concentration. She progressed well and has recently cleared their bronze Level i.e. she is said to be 6 mths ahead of her peers at K2 level.

My my DD when he was younger, it was really a pain and struggle everyday getting him to complete his worksheets. But it did help him in arithematic. -
Hi Lisa, is beestar an online maths worksheet program?
Is it tailored to MOE syllabus?
