      hi,

i am new to kumon english.

just started my girl last week Monday first lesson.
wanted her to learn to be self disciplined, focus, concentrate well, learn to be indpendent to do her homework, via the kumon way.

may i ask - roughly how long then can a child read independently, after attending kumon english lessons ? or roughly at which level ?

now, my girl aged 3.3 - still can’t read independently.

every night, i read storybooks to her.
I will point out word by word - using my finger to point to her, so that she can follow. This way, she can follow, she can read.

but after that, when i ask her to read out entire the sentence on her own independently, she is lost.

any parent encounter similar situation before ?

all advice from parents - are very much appreciated.
Thank you very much gratefully, for your kind advice.

        hi sweetiepie,

i suggest … please do not give up, please continue. Try out at least 1 term first, roughly 3 months first, then see how…

beginning, perhaps yr child is not used to new environment. But after a while, yr child will slowly get the hang of it, will start to accept kumon.

ultimately what you want is …she is able to do her school work independently one day, be able to read books / novels independently on her own one day.

Keep focusing on these important long term goals. Do not get side tracked / distracted by short term distractions. Please don’t give up. One day eventually, you’ll see your reward for your little child. Keep Persevering !

          hi greenbean2011,

it’s great to know that you are pressing on to read to your kid. don’t give up. they would start reading when they are ready. some kids actually do know how to read but for fear of not knowing some words, they would rather not read so that their parents may not say hurtful things to them.

the key is to maintain the interest in reading.

Should be able to read simple sentences after 1 year and able to read independently after 2 years

Mine started around same age as yours. Can read simple ladybird story books at age 4 and Usborne pocket science by age 5

Kumon does not place much emphasis on phonics. Optional - you may want to send your child for additional phonics classes

Thanks for your kind sharing, sleepy! 🙂

                    good!
at least now i hv a rough idea when she can read by herself.

is yr child still in kumon english? yr child in Primary school now ?

my girl just started kumon english last wk at Thomson branch - one bus stop after Thomson Medical centre. Saw a lot of kids inside, sitting on the bench, doing homework quietly, independently.

phonics i let her kindergarten teach her. They teach phonics using Letterland … heard a few primary schools also using Letterland.

btw, besides vocab and reading comprehension passages, does kumon english cover how to write … creative composition part?

Not sure about P1 le. Mine only attended less than a year. I find the pace abit slow. That particular center she attended skipped quite a number of worksheets. Withdrawn her leow
