• RE: PW results

      Hi ngl2010,

My DS did his PW in 2015. Not sure whether in his sec sch he did something like PW kind of work, thou they did have q. a few projects throughout the 4 yrs of sec life. DIdn't monitor/supervise in detail in sec sch.
But I suspect they didn't have the equiv. of the PW experience that the IP students had. Cos the focus of an O level student is q.different from an IP student as eventually the big picture for them is the O level.

However I don't think this non-experience with PW type of project work is a big obstacle, as the JAE students in his JC did as well as the IP students, In fact, in his own class, there were IP students who didn't get an A; resulting in them unable to get the perfect score during the A level exams. Personally I feel the tutor's guidance is v.important. Also as PW is mostly internally graded....school's \"policy\" is impt too, IMHO.

I'm of the opinion MOE/SEAB should review how PW are graded (or even scrap it), personally don't think it is a fair exercise for the whole nation cohort. This is not sour grapes or anything cos my DS did manage to get an A.

P.S This was our experience a few yrs ago, not sure any changes to the system since then..
I am just wondering... is PW (or something similar to PW but is called a different name) taught in non-IP secondary school? According to DS, his JAE friends were not taught PW before they joined JC.

PW is offered to JC1 or its equivalent

What I mean is whether they learnt it in advance in secondary school. For DS's school, they were taught PW (it is not called PW though) since Year 1 so they have been doing something similar to PW 3 times before (year 1, year 2, year 3). DS said it looks like his JAE friends are doing PW the first time when they are in JC1. Is it true that non-IP secondary schools don't teach PW (or whatever name they call it in secondary schools)?
• RE: What is your dinner?

      Hi Jennifer,

Just to clarify Blk 85 Fengshan FC is not the same as Bedok Interchange FC, just in the small chance you are confused.. 😄

I agree with MP that the Bedok Interchange FC is v.stuffy. Even I hardly eat there, the ventilation system there is somewhat off.

If u do decide to try out the Fengshan FC, just note that u will probably have to park at the open carpark across the road fm the FC. Those carpark lots next to the FC are normally occupied, even on weekday afternoons.

The carpark across is only abt 5 mins walk away fm the FC.

I also agree with MP that hawker ctr food are all abt the same, even at these so called well known food centres.

But similarly to me all those Kopitiam food are all similar and probably taste worse than Bedok I/C or Fengshan FC.

Don't set your expectations too high cos hawker food is not fine dining and environment sure hot since not aircon. It's another kind of experience and much more pocket friendly. 😄

I will still recommend Blk 85 Fengshan FC if you've never been there before and will be around the vicinity looking for hawker ctr food.

P.S. The Mkt Place @ Simpang Bedok is also hawker ctr but a slightly more upscale experimental type. Prices are more expensive and the food choices there are not your typical hawker food.
But parking there and seating even are really bad during dinner times.

      You're welcome, Jennifer.

Hope u have an enjoyable journey to the east feasting experience. :smile

      Hi, Integer.

      :thankyou: for the recommendations.

I think hawker centre will suit our needs better, since each of us has different preferences 😂

      Good Morning.

Not sure you will be travelling that day by car or MRT. Any cuisine u have in mind?

Oh, recently I tried one Taiwanese hotpot at Bedok Point and I was surprised how much I enjoyed it. Price wise v.reasonable too.

Of course in the far East there's the rather well-known food centre, the Feng Shan FC at Bedok North, which opens till late at night/early morning.

All these places I mentioned are easily assessible to the ECP (towards Airport).

We are planning to have dinner at the east, then go to Changi Airport to pick up elder boy.

What is recommended at the east?
      Hi Jennifer,

We had dinner once at this place at Simpang Bedok ( @ Bedok Mkt Place, quite near to the Airport ). The seafood were v.fresh. I especially love their prawns.

But be warned that the parking situation is quite bad there, especially during weekends. Also, no aircon.

    • RE: * Nanyang JC (NYJC)

      Liangbrolovesoccer:
      conqueror:
I am not really sure about how dey taught @ NYJC but judging from the difficulty standard of NYJC papers for the sci subjs their standards shd b on par with other top JCs IMO. I took Phy Chem Math for H2 science subjs so not too sure abt Bio.

Did NY papers as student when I was in HCJC. Thr phy paper standards are somewhat similar to what the few top tier JCs have out thr (don't feel like their standards were anywhere lower than us either). For maths their paper is considered to be challenging for an average student actually (if doing under time constraints) but is of quality as the qns are very specific and drills solidly on concepts. (NY math papers are usually put aside in our revision packages as hard papers back then, heard the papers are tougher recently)

NYJC Chem Papers are well known to be killer papers (that is my only comment tbh)... is even more cancer than my own college's papers IMO. (dat somewhat explains for their distinction rate) Last time we got this joke in chem: 5 papers from the top JCs: HC=can do, VJ=can do, NJ=can do, RJ=smart ass can do, AJ-cannot do, NY-forget it u never can do :rotflmao:

If NY can secure almost on-par results with VJ and even surpassing NJ for A'lvls I don't see how NY's teaching standards can be low. :skeptical:

That must be in the past, bro. My daughter is doing her A levels at the moment. She mentioned that other than RI(JC) and HCI(JC) prelim papers which are killer-papers, the rest of them, including Chemistry for NYJC, are manageable and not distinguishable from other JCS papers, i.e., a combination of both easy and difficult questions.
Can you please explain how NY has 'secure almost on-par results with VJ and even surpassing NJ for A'lvls' which is very misleading? You shouldn't post such misdeclaration in public unless you have obtained all the information for comparison from these 3 JCS which obviously you are not able to. Is this your 'marketing' tactic to win top JAE pupils over to Nyjc? It's not right but despicable!
I agree that Nyjc is a good JC but please don't forcefully over-valuate it such that it becomes a laughing-stock to parents of other JCS 😆

Regarding the paper difficulty I agree with you since I graduated from JC quite a few yrs alrd. But I am not trying to sell NYJC here (it isn't my interest at all. Anyway why would someone deliberately wasting time marketing the products for their enemy camp?)

Hard facts here (from my juniors, so that was how I arrived at the statement dat NY does have on par results): NJC pass rate for H2 Math is 91.2%, NY is 93.4% (VJ was 94.?%). It was also from NY's chem dept themselves to my juniors dat their batch performance is better than NJ (and they had a pizza treat from their tutors). So unless someone really proves me wrong dats was my impression of the sch from my own experiences and what I have know of (which I feel NY is decent enough and have their standards thr, certainly the recently retired principal had put in a lot of effort to improve the sch).

NYJC, like other colleges, do deserve some respect for their commitment, even if it was not dat good in the past as you mentioned. Again it contradicts when you are looking at NYJC with all the sentiments from the outdated past. I am not criticising anyone, its up to u to disagree with my opinions. But once again don't bluntly put me as a shameless promoter and thinking dat someone from HCJC don't know his grounds!!
Not sure which year you are referring to but for both 2016 & 2015 A levels, VJC H2 Maths Pass rate is 100%.
