RE: All About Real Proper Singing Lessons
REAL, PROPER and PROFESSIONAL Singing lessons should teach your child the proper way to breathe and pitch from the diaphragm, - NOT FROM THE NOSE OR THROAT NOR BY SHOUTING - and she/he should be taught the rudiments of music, and sing in the appropriate way for the style of music she/he likes (be it pop, classical, jazz, R&B, etc.) In this way, she/he can learn to project her/his voice and make it more solid, extend her/his range, pitch accurately, and her/his voice becomes\ clearer and smoother, and she/he can also really learn to read music like real musicians do.
The human voice is an instrument, and whatever you are singing, there are the corresponding notes to it. Your child should learn the notes to what she/he are singing!!
So in addition to proper breathing and pitching techniques, your child should be taught the rudiments of music (using the piano/keyboard/guitar) - for her/him to learn to read notes, to know the keys to her/his songs, to sightsing, to count and differentiate time signatures, harmony, the different genres of music, etc. Your child should be able to choose to sing in whatever song genre she/he wants– be it pop, jazz, blues, theatre and classical. Your child should be taught the techniques very well so much so that she/he can become versatile and can sing in any genre. It is only when your child decides to concentrate on one genre that she/he loves very much, then she/he can concentrate and specialise in that genre. But Good technique is good technique. And good technique enables you to sing anyting and be versatile!
THE SINGING TEACHER MUST TEACH YOU HOW TO READ MUSIC!!!
If the singing teacher has no knowledge of reading music, and cannot accompany your child on piano or guitar or organ, and is grabbing sounds from the air to teach you, this is inadequate singing training! All of the above techniques and rudiments should be taught with the teacher playing the piano/keyboard or guitar for your child. She/He should teach the techniques using scales, while checking your child’s pitch against the piano/keyboard/guitar. How will a teacher be able to tell if your child i in pitch except if she/he pitch it against an instrument? The teacher should be able to accompany your child while she/he is singing. Teachers who teach singing using only instrumental tracks and are not able read and play music themselves to play the scales and accompany your child, are just teaching your child TO MIMIC and COPY SOUNDS LIKE A PARROT!
CLASSICAL STYLE SINGING IS DIFFERENT FROM POP/JAZZ SINGING!!!
Classical singing techniques and tones are different from pop and jazz technique and tones! The teacher cannot let your child be doing pop songs with her head or choir voice only. Pop and jazz and R&B call more for a “conversational” style of singing, with some head voice thrown in, and that calls for special belting techniques THAT DO NOT MAKE YOUR CHILD SHOUT.
A proper singing teacher should teach your child how to sing with her/his chest voice without shouting and hurting her/his voice! Shouting is bad for the throat and proper singing teachers should not let your child shout and hurt her/his throat. Note: Please do not listen to classical singing teachers who say singing pop and belting is bad for the voice. No. 1 – there is a way to belt SAFELY and FROM THE DIAPHRAGM that is safe for your throat. No. 2 – Shouting and screaming is NOT BELTING and No. 3 – Probably, the classical singing teacher probably does not know how to sing pop nor to belt, that is why she says this. Just as to play classical piano has a different style and approach from playing jazz piano and pop piano, you cannot be using classical techniques and approach to sing pop and jazz songs!
SINGING EXAMS SHOULD BE MADE AVAILABLE
If you might want your child’s singing lessons to be accredited or certified, you have the option of taking the Trinity Guildhall or ABRSM or Rock School Singing Exams. Your child may also, of course, take lessons for leisure or other professional objectives
Lessons at $70 per session from a Trinity Guildhall certified teacher of 12 years at local and international schools, and a seasoned professional singer of 25 years local and international performing experience. Performance/Vocal coaching is also available for semi- professional and professional singers, or for those going for a singing audition. . -
What is a REAL PROPER SINGING LESSON?
http://i50.tinypic.com/5mwx2f.jpg\"> REAL PROPER Singing lessons should first teach you the proper way/technique to breathe to deliver the correct sound production and notes – not from the throat or nose - but from the DIAPHRAGM!
Your teacher cannot just let you start singing without checking if your voice is in the proper placement - whether you are too throaty or nasal - or you might even be already singing/breathing from the diaphragm, but just not deep enough!
Even if you have the desire and passion to sing, if your sound is coming from strange wrong places in your body, then you are singing incorrectly, and probably even in a way that's harmful to your throat and health!
AURAL TRAINING & RUDIMENTS OF MUSIC
A proper singing teacher should also teach you the rudiments of music –the human voice is an instrument, and whatever you are singing, there are the corresponding notes to it. You should learn the notes to what you are singing!! DO NOT SING LIKE A PARROT, JUST MIMICKING SOUNDS, and NOT EVEN KNOWING WHAT YOUR KEY IS OR WHAT NOTES YOU ARE SINGING!
If you have aural problems, e.g, your pitch is always off, flat, sharp, aside from the correct breathing techniques, this is usually corrected by the correct mouth shape of vowels and learning to play with an instrument - in my course, I use a piano/keyboard or guitar. You will learn how to find out from a piano or guitar if you are out of tune or not.
So, in addition to proper breathing and pitching techniques, you will be taught how to know the keys to your songs, to sightsing, to count in the different time signatures, the different genres of music, etc. You can choose whatever song genre you want to sing in – be it pop, jazz, blues, theatre and classical.
A TEACHER WHO CAN ACCOMPANY YOU, A TEACHER WHO CAN SING AND PLAY
All of the above should be taught by a teacher who can accompany you on the piano or guitar, NOT using instrumental tracks/karaoke. Teachers who teach singing using instrumental tracks because they are not able read and play music themselves are not properly trained music professionals. They are inadequate and untrained music teachers! Your teacher must be able to read and write music herself! These untrained music teachers are just teaching you TO MIMIC and COPY SOUNDS LIKE A PARROT! If your teacher has no knowledge of reading music, and cannot accompany you, and is grabbing sounds from the air to teach you, this is a very inadequate and untrained person pretending to be a music teacher. ALSO, beware of singing teachers who can only teach you how to sing in a classical style! They might be able to play piano and accompany you, but they will not be able to teach you to sing popular songs in the proper modern pop way! The way pop songs are sang are so differently from the classical songs! The placement and approach to singing pop and classical is different - BUT both come for the diaphragm!
SINGING EXAMS & PERFORMANCE
If you also want your singing lessons to be accredited or certified, your teacher should be able to prepare you for the Trinity or ABRSM Singing Exams.
Last but not least, teaching you to project, to emote, to express and to learn the different approaches to the different styles of music, should also be taught! e.g, you cannot sing Adele or Lady Gaga or Rihanna in a classical head voice!!!! Vice versa, generally, classical songs should not be sang in a chest voice!
Performance/Vocal coaching is also available for semi- professionals and professional singers, or those going for a singing audition. Beginner piano/Pop Piano lessons also available. Email me at [email protected] for any more enquiries, or call 96512921. -
