• RE: CHIJ (Katong) Primary

blacknblue:
Posted this question at the P1 registration subforum, but realise it's probably better asked here. Does anyone have an opinion on KC Secondary?

My wife is concerned with the (previous?) reputation of the school in terms of student behaviour as well academic performance.

Is this concern valid or unwarranted? Very keen to hear from parents who have girls who are currently attending (or very recently attended) KC Secondary.

Particularly interested in the culture and values imparted at the school.
Yes, your concern is unwarranted. Yes, of all the IJ, it isn't the top in terms of academic results. However, KC provides holistic a education. They emphasize on the appreciation of arts. Once a year, the school stops all classes for a week and the students immerse themselves in performances. Be it plays, bands, music ... you name it. No student is left behind if you are weak in a subject. They don't ask you to leave or drop a subject just to maintain an aggregate score. The teachers are the most dedicated I have seen...and they have many old girls going back to teach because they want to give back. Such are the values taught at KC.
I gave up on entering a SAP school and went to KC instead. No regrets. . I made friends from all walks of life. Even those who struggled in school all turned out really well.

Dear Parents,

Would like to hear some views from other parents please.
Next year would be my daughter's turn for P1 registration. Im an ex IJ Toa payoh girl and would hence fall under phase 2A1 cos ive also joined alumni. This would also mean 90% of acceptance. The problem is we live in the east and travelling to toa payoh would mean about 1 hour to and fro. By school bus would take 1.5hrs to and fro.

Now our next alternative is St Anthony's Conossian Convent which is much nearer to where we live and each day would probably take 30 mins to and fro.
We would fall under phase 2C if we decide on this school. Historical results showed that applicants within 1km have all been accepted.

Our dilemma now is st anthony's conossian is not as good school as IJ Toa Payoh and it's so wasted to give up a precious seat there. However, the travelling time is really bothering us.

I wonder how would other parents decide? Any other factors we should consider?

Help help

I am an old girl from Katong Convent and I taught in SAC for about six months. So I will try not to sound bias. ๐Ÿ˜‚ The fact is mission schools have an obligation to teach the children' the christian way of life. There's more than just academia. If I am staying in the east, I will send my daughter back to KC, not because SAC is bad but only because I like to see my daughter in the IJ pinafore. (so lame .. i know).

I'm now feeling slightly anxious, I was just thinking of choosing whichever school is most near my house for the sake of convenience, is it really important to get into a good school?

The school curriculum unlike decades ago are relentless. So I think a school near home would be better because kids today spend long hours in school for enrichment, extra classes etc etc. If travel time is too long, poor child will be so tired by the time they reach home.

As for \"good\" school. I think grades aside, it's whether the school has the right CCA that your child has interest in. Some \"good\" schools will emphasize teaching to the better kids forgetting those who may struggle. I think as parents we need to understand our child, what will make them thrive and enjoy school so that they can learn.

With the influx of foreigners, many of them go to neighbourhood schools and they drive the results high......so not a good gauge.
I think now quite alot of CCA needed to be \"pay\" if the school engaged an external coach to teach.

Holy need to \"pay\" for certain CCA too with external coach. Holy Chinese Orchestra needed to pay \"extra\" starting from last year. Heard quite a no. quit because of this.
Sigh...I guess I am so out of touch with the school system. Gone are the days where CCA (or ECA during my time) means non-examinable fun! ๐Ÿ˜‚

my boy joined the football cca... one thing good is that they accept the child even they may not play the game well... ๐Ÿ˜„ haha... probably that's why the football cca is not one of the \"hot\" cca as they didn't win competition. But is alright as long as our kid enjoy themselves.

That's good to hear! I find it interesting when my colleagues told me that at Maris Stella, the P1 kids are put through some \"trials\" and if you are good you are given the option to take that CCA. eg Badminton. Then you have to pay additional 400 bucks per term for an external coach to teach?? Pardon my ignorance but I thought CCA was for kids to learn something outside of academic work and for them to enjoy...not so competitive! :scared:
