qiqimi:I think you should go with whichever you are comfortable with. There are 2 schools of thought with regards to these 2 treatments with different sets of pros and cons. If you are already a contact lens wearer and are familiar with how lenses work with the associated risks, then you might be more open to orthok. I used to wear lenses, but went for surgery after. I used to help my children with the cleaning but now i get them to do it by themselves under my watchful eye of course. My p3 girl myopia is 420 for both sides. Last year it was 320. In 2 weeks time I am bringing her to see eye specialist. And I have a feeling dr will recommend atrophine.
I read much about ortho k lenses too. As a contact lens wearer myself for past 20 years, I think I am able to help my girl with the cleaning of lenses.
I am in dilemma, should I start her with atropine for a year or should I immediately start her off with ortho k lenses. Appreciate your advises.

One started at age 7 and the other at 10. I see some mothers at the clinic who have children on 0.01% atropine but since it doesn't control the power very well, they are starting on orthok. 1% is more effective but a lot of side effects and my kids hate the feeling when their eyes are dilated because it is very bright and they cannot read clearly.
How old are your children before you started them on Ortho-K? As I mentioned in my earlier post, Atropine 0.1% didn't work for my kid, and we are trying Atropine 1% now. If still no improvement, we will have to try out Ortho-K as well. I understand that infection is the main concern in Ortho-K? Apparently, many cases ends up with SNEC inpatient due to bad infection.
Infection is always a concern with anything we put in the eyes. I understand the risks and will follow all the instructions to make sure there will be no infection. Anyway I see pictures of the eyes at every visit so i know they are okay and they are so happy to be running around without specs and their power is controlled! I go to Titus Eyecare, they specialize in orthok. You can do a search to see who is near you perhaps. -

Hi, has anyone heard of ortho-k lens? a type of hard lens which the kids wear to sleep at night, and their vision will be corrected the next day. any feedback abt this?
Yes! My 2 children are doing it too! Best thing ever for them. Controlled power, no need specs, healthy eyes. Will take a little while to be comfortable with the whole process but it is all worth it! -
RE: Manuka Honey
For me, if my children are drinking honey lemon, i normally use warm water. Maybe its a chinese mentality but i feel cold water causes some problems and lead to cough etc. When my girls have a cough, a cup of warm honey lemon helps alot! I almost never add ice to it. Now, how warm should the water be? I don’t know the answer, but i normally use hot water and add twice the amount of plain water to it and mix it until it dissolves nicely. Are there other ways other mummies prepare the drink?

I actually did some research first and then went to consult if my girls are suitable. At the consult, they will do the full eye check and discuss what are the options available then from there we decide which treatment will be most suitable. I decided to put them on orthok because i know it will slow down myopia progression. As for the risk of infection, i figured if i participate in the process, and since they are doing it at home with me, it should be safe. As long as the practitioner does a good job and i like the place i go to because i get to see exactly what is happening through pictures and scans during the follow up visits so i have a peace of mind.
For Ortho-k treatment, do you go and see a eye doctor first and then go for this treatment or at first you decided to go for this treatment. How long has your daughther been in this treatment. Thank you.
Sometimes too many cooks spoil the broth, so i chose the clinic, put my trust in them and be as involved as i can and so far that has been working out well for me. Both of them have been on it for about 1 year plus and now they are given the green light to rest 2 days per week and still maintain good vision. Myopia is also controlled. -
RE: TCM and TCM Clinic for kids
Can anyone comment on the TCM clinic Annie Thiang? Thinking of bringing my daughter there for migraine issues. Heard of this clinic but wanted to check again. Thank you!

RE: All About Kids' Eye-sight
Breez, maybe the eye doc felt that the power did not go up too much and did not feel a need to do any myopia control?
Yes i believe dilation will affect the results. It is supposed to be accurate but most of the time for my children, it ends up lower than it is supposed to and still cause blurriness.
For Ortho-k treatment, i go to Titus Eye Care at Serene Centre. Before i went there, i did some research and this link http://www.orthokacademy.com/singapore/ it shows the practitioners in Singapore that are registered with the international academy of orthok who are practicing orthok. If they have a Fellow badge means they are specialized in this field. That is how i chose my place. You can see who is closer to you or if you are willing to travel.
As for age, my daughters started when they were 7 and 10, both are on it. So far, the eye power never increase, in fact it came down a little. So far so good, no issues. They can play sports without glasses so i am happy. It is up to your level of comfort but best is call and make an appointment to get checked first. -
RE: All About Kids' Eye-sight
Breez, it happened to my children as well. When HPB sent me the letter for my children, I brought them to see an eye doctor, and the power was lower than expected but they still could not see properly. The reason, I feel is because of the dilating drops, which normally shows a lower power than what is supposed to be. Anyway, if your child is 400 at primary 1, my research shows me that it will definitely progress very quickly through the years. That is the reason why i chose to put both my children on Orthok. As long as i participate in the process, it is safe. Also, find a good orthokeratologist. Another method is to put them on Atropine eye drops although they will still rely on spectacles all the time, sometimes even bifocal glasses due to the side effects of the drop. Something needs to be done to stop the myopia from getting worse too fast!

Hi all, I managed to get my ds appointment at SNEC brought forward 1 month to end Mar. So the waiting time fr polyclinic to SNEC is slightly more than 2 mths. Going to collect his new pair of glasses with myopia control lenses later.
My ds went for his appt yesterday. Doctor appear professional and approachable. Ds put on high dosage atropine for 6mths. Told that treatment is for 2 years. Asked to choose low dose of 0.1% or high dose of 1%. Low dose may not be fruitful and can only tell 1 year down the road if at all. Taking a bet since ds myopia too severe. Prescribed progressive and transition lens to protect from glare.
Anyone with kids on higher dose atropine to share experience?
Hi Eu Ern, my children are not on atropine but i have friends' children who are on high dose. They normally wear either progressive or bifocal glasses and sunglasses or transition lenses because it will be too bright. Progressive of bifocal because they will not be able to read. If your Ds is active like my children, i recommend doing orthok instead. Same or better myopia control and freedom of glasses. Of cos i help them with cleaning so i know it is really safe. -
RE: All About Kids' Eye-sight
I feel it is good anyway, although it might not be the most accurate at times, it really helps with children who really require help but are not detected. While one may feel it is a waste of time to find out your child is actually seeing fine, i think it has helped save many children’s eyesight so in the bigger picture, it is good.
