Any parent here whose DS had gone for the 4-5 weeks China Immersion Programmes to Beijing or Xi'an/Wuxi Winter Campus for Sec 3 CSE students and would like to share with us your son's educational experience there?

I understand the 5-week BSC Beijing immersion programme is more intensive and demanding in the aspect of China studies. My son is in SMTP and I am not sure whether to let him participate in the Beijing segment which I think should be more enriching compared to Xi'an and Wuxi.

Your feedback and advice on choice of programme will be greatly appreciated.
My son joined Beijing immersion last year, just for fun and relax.

Hi. I am a Secondary 2 student, and although I know I'm not a parent, I came here upon knowing about this site because I know parents are really serious about their kids and children's education and well-being. I am looking for CIP work around Singapore for Secondary 2's to fulfill my NYAA And CIP Hours. I so far only have 35 hours and I know I have a lot of time but after volunteering a few times, I found out I liked volunteering and wanted to go beyond the 100 hour requirements needed. Does any parent where to volunteer? THANKS. šŸ™‚

      You can check out https://www.facebook.com/VolunteerNowww

It's really good to see young students like you take on roles of volunteering. I hope that your passion for volunteering will continue growing, and perhaps a few years down the road, you'll be joining me volunteering at CDAC.

By the way, I'm an NYAA Gold holder, so if you're interested in going for higher levels of the Award, you can PM me to find out how did I find my activities.

My child is also looking for CIP for NYAA. Thank you for your sharing.

Thank you very much for your replies. No wonder this forum is active. Because the replies are faster than the school's :).

Tetsujin - could I draw upon your years of experience please? When is the first parent teacher meeting for Sec 1's? Before the actual Parent Teacher meeting, what are my avenues for reaching out to teachers? I would think email is the less intrusive on teachers' time.

I have a younger son who is in P5, a neighbourhood school. I communicate with his teachers via email. They respond maybe 2-3 days later but at least, they do.
I am ok with HCI teachers. currently my DS is in Sec 1, I have wrote email to his FT twice, both are replied in same day. you can call teacher directly to make appointment.
Regarding math result, my understanding is they just take the higher one as Term 1 result.

I was very worried about the computer usage before when a senior pre-warned me about the amount of time her son spent on computer gaming in sec 1 & 2. I was told, when her DS was allowed to bring his notebook to school in sec 2, the kids started to hangout at nearby fast food chain to play. Also with smart phones, it becomes harder to supervise the undesirable websites they go to. Luckily or unlikely this year in sec 3, the workload has increased so much that her DS has no time to continue with his 'nonsense', as she puts it.

I do not think checking EMB takes up that much time as there are no more than 5 messages a day and most do not require any response. What needs supervision is the use of facebook. It is a distraction as messages keep popping up every other second, many of which are non productive / undirected discussions. One just cannot focus when in the middle of work, the phone keeps beeping or vibrating. For that I set firm rules, no messing around with the phone in the middle of a piece of work. Any questions or doubts if help is needed should be clarified before or after at one go.

Other than that, there is very little else we can do to reduce computer time. Doing up notes, putting up ppts, researching or working on IS related projects, they all take time. I would rather they put in good effort than to rush to complete them.
Strongly agree, this is the most headache now, I think we need to work hard, smart and more patiently atleast two years until DSs can manage themselves.

      Tks!

There is school bus from woodlands ($110/mth). You might want to consider if you could not find carpool.

Hi.. hope you have found your car pool. I stay in Woodlands too. My DS takes a private transport (mini van) to school in the morning. Price is the same as the school bus, $110 per month. šŸ™‚ DS boards the van at about 6:05-6:10am.. being the first to be up the transport.. and reaches school about 6:40am.[/quote]Hi. jojong and mum.com, thank you for your info, pls kind send me the bus contact no if you could. Currently I just drive myself every morning, normally we left home 6:30am, and reach HC about 7:00am, thus I feel a bit tire and look for carpool. BTW, I'll attend both talk on Feb. 18.
