    • RE: HBL courseware - is Singapore context important?

      ChiefKiasu\" post_id=\"2040567\" time=\"1633317826\" user_id=\"3:

We all know online teaching is still in its infancy despite going thru the 2nd round of its incarnation. Yes, Singaporean context will be useful, but is it available at this moment? Also, will it make sense to push for it now when the whole world is in a mess? Just some food for thought...
Thanks for the reply. Yes, I know that HBL is still very much a work-in-progress and students in SG are already better off than many others overseas who do not even have an online learning alternative to attending school during the pandemic. I recognise that our educators are not having an easy time managing HBL.

However, the point I was trying to make is that perhaps there can be some curation of content used by e-learning courseware developers? After all, if I was able to find other videos which are arguably better suited with a perfunctory search online, then surely our educators can do likewise?

It didn't help that I also spotted a grammatical error in a suggested answer for an English assignment today. I hope I'm just imagining things although it does seem at first glance that the error is a common mistake in English grammar from a particular part of the world.

The above YouTube video was used in my P2 kid's English HBL lesson today to illustrate what a postcard is. While there's nothing factually wrong with the video, the video was narrated by a kid with a very heavy South Asian accent while the example used was a postcard from the Philippines and uploaded by \"Philippines Post Office\".

I understand that MOE's appointed e-learning courseware developer (Wizlearn?) may occasionally need to depend on publicly available resources for content instead of producing those which may be more relevant for Singapore's context. That said, there are other publicly available resources such as https://youtu.be/fXj7NbzfbQI which may be better suited.

    • RE: 2019 P1 Registration Exercise for 2020 In-take

Visited Nan Chiau today and was told the School is calling applicants outside 1km radius to withdraw since no chance of ballot and turning away those who walk in. So can safely assume most if not all applicants are within 1km.

Based on yesterday’s status, chance is likely 1 in 4 or less for even those within 1km.

      Crazy demand this year!

    • RE: 2019 P1 Registration Exercise for 2020 In-take

Phase 2C starts tomorrow (29 Jul) and ends 01 Aug. We are SCs living within 1km of NCPS.

What we know at this point:

      1. There are 59 vacancies in Phase 2C in 2019
      2. Historicallu, balloting is needed even for SCs living within 1km
      3. There were 52, 72, 74 places in Phase 2C in 2018, 2017, 2016 respectively
      4. There were 203, 203, 183 applicants in Phase 2C in 2018, 2017, 2016 respectively. Most (if not all) are likely to be SCs within 1km too.
      5. Based on Points 3 & 4, chances of being successful in the ballot is approx 25% - 40%.
      6. Based on the increasingly higher demand in this growing estate, we estimate a 29% chance of being successful in the ballot.
      7. Compassvale Pri has 129 places in Phase 2C this year so there's an approx 90% - 100% chance for SCs within 1km.

Question: Does the school update the number of applications received at the school in real time and whether these applicants are within 1km? MOE only provides an end of day update of the number of applicants at 8pm.

As parents whose kids are in NCPS, do you regret placing your kids there? Heard about the stress about being in an 'elite' primary school and the supposed focus only on the top and bottom performers there.

Your thoughts are much appreciated as we make this important decision over the next few days. Thank you!

Thought I'd post this here instead since it's related to the experience of parents whose kids are already in Nan Chiau Primary School (NCPS).

    • RE: 2018 P1 registration exercise for 2019 intake

      ChiefKiasu:

Sorry noon questions for a first time parents whose kid is going to register for 2020 intake?

      1. When will balloting statistics for the 2019 P1 intake be out?

      2. Only has a 1 in 3 chance of getting into our preferred school (A) under 2C but 90% chance of getting into decent neighbourhood school (B). Both within 1km.

Should we try for A or B in 2C given that the other schools in our area with places remaining in 2C(S) aren’t that great?

This question should have been posted under the 2019 for 2020 thread 🙂
The stats will be out WHILE they are still useful. That is, before the P1 Registration this year.

For your 2nd question, you must state the chance of getting into the 2nd school in the last Phase 2C(S). If the chance is very low, I think I would prefer to take the 2nd school earlier in Phase 2C.

Oops, sorry didn’t realise there is already a thread for 2020 intake.

Yup, practically no chance of getting into B under 2C(S). So looks like better to go for the bird in hand (B) than the two in the bush (A).

    • RE: All About Parent Volunteers (PV)

Is is true that the Hokkien Huay Kuan (HHK) can accept female members as PVs in their schools too? Reason being only wife is Hokkien (even though my mum is Hokkien too).

Is it too late to sign up as a HHK member if my kid is entering the P1 registration exercise in 2019 for the 2020 intake? Heard HKK members who are PVs have higher chance for transfer to HKK schools in P2 even if not successful for P1 registration?

Still short of 1 referrer from an existing member even though. The irony is that while I stay a stone throw’s away from a HHK school of our choice, our kid will most probably not stand a chance as many places are taken up by siblings, alumni, GRLs etc…
