Harlequin... Yes, of course if you're thinking of \"in the long run\" and don't mind to do up some parts of the house where you think will make money-sense to do so, by all means go all out for it and especially if you are thinking the house is great for keeps.
Our designer suggested a lite box for our living room ceilling so that it can cover all the wiring plus concealed cosy yellow lights that you can choose to turn on or off certain row of lights at a time. But it was too costly.
So we stuck to just tw pretty white light covers instead, with energy-saving bulbs when we did our living room ceiling fan. -
Surveillance security system cannot be turn off right? It's linked to Cisco 24/7 ... can only disable certain functions and cameras while we are in. The 12 big spots lights mounted at the exterior of the house are motion censor, and we were advice not to disable them, at night the surveillance cameras need these spots lights to capture clear image... :xedfingers:
What else, that I can cut down.. thinking.....thinking... thinking. -

Turn off the spot lights, invest in IR LED activated by motion sensor. -
Harlequin, How about solar water heater?
And solar cells power supply… since you are in landed, can fix at rooftop. -
On light bulbs, there have been complaints about LED bulbs spoiling faster. At few times the cost of a T5 (or whatever), one has to think hard if this is really cost saving in the long run. Also, energy guzzling depend on wattage - nowadays energy saving (non-LED bulbs) also can deliver some savings without the hefty upfront.
Hotpots are guzzlers becos they are usually left on 24x7. My MIL switched from hotpot to kettle and there was a noticeable drop in utility bills. -

from what I understand, the ticks are meant to refer to energy consumption. Don't think they refer to water consumption.
Actually I still don't quite know: for washers, does the label show that they are energy- or water-efficient? I thought they are water drops and not ticks (like the aircon, dryer and fridge? -
over time, the fridges compressor can become less efficient. I actually observed a saving of as much as $40~50 when I bought a new one. Of course, the saving will also reduce over time.

In terms of cost, surely Harlequin can well afford that.. As for energy savings, it is indisputable.
Plus, Harlequin, LED producers Less heat.. so may help to cut off some aircon bills.. :evil:
For hotpots, it is better to get those with better insulation. Some better ones uses about 17W~24W to keep warm.. this translates to about $6~7 per mth.
Of coz, for SAHM, they can afford to stay at home and boil water as necessary so no need for this luxury appliance.
But for dual income families, having to constantly remember to boil water can be a real chore.. and imagine kopi addicts rushing to work only to realise there is no hot water in the thermo flask...... anyway, this is matter of choice.. if you have someone to always ensure supply of hot water and someone to boil for you.. why not?
btw, the kettle runs on gas or electricity? and is it PUB gas or cylinder?
If you take away one electricity consuming appliance, and then replace it with one that runs on cylinders, it is not surprising if there is significant drop in utility bills. Even if it runs on PUB gas, gas will still be cheaper then electricity if heating is concerned.
So, for those who can afford to boil water without hotpot, it is indeed good cost saving advise to switch to gas heated kettles. -
had a friend who switched to LED lights and she complained about the bulbs constantly needed replacing - hubby heads some energy conservation unit in his co so he may not be buying those dubious branded ones.
Anyway, LED that uses 4W vs T5 that uses 6W. Cost price is very much different, will the energy savings amount to much?
I'm no engineer and these stuff baffle me. Just going with whatever DH chooses.
