The truth is, it's the alumni phase that offers the diversity of background.
When in some such schools, there are barely 10% of spots in Phase 2C left over for the general public, how can one say that alumni priority which will lock in increasingly large numbers of places as the years go by, be said to promote diversity? Soon even the 2B slots will become limited.
Over the mid-long term, alumni priority stratifies society.
It's happening already, the diversity at some 'premier' primary schools is dismal. -
Ummm I knew one mailroom guy from acs in p school previously le. He may be hiding masses of wealth (dont know him that well), but dont seem apparent.
Anyway to solely go by distance will be surefire way to stratify. Who got the means to stay in private proprries around bt timah? Answer quite clear. -

Some middle-income families sent their daughters by trishaw to schools like nanyang primary. Some children walked to school. Some were chauffeur drive (rare). Chauffeur driven kids were rare sight. But if a child was chauffeur driven, somehow the whole school will know which child or family of children is that. Because sometimes is not just one child alone, but their siblings and cousins too also studied in the same school.
Then during recess time, the \"ma Jie\" will bring home cooked food to school, let the siblings & cousins eat together. When they opened up the lunch box, is a sumptuous meal. Some Of their classmates will exclaim \"wow!\", When they opened up the Delicious packed lunch box. inside Got yummy hot piping fragrant rice, chinese sausage, bacon, ham, etc - better than eating the food inside the tuck shop.
Then when these p6 girls from nanyang primary graduated & subsequently studied in nanyang girls' high, they tend to meet boys from hwa Ching secondary. Some of these secondary nanyang girls were shy. They wonder how the secondary boys look like. So some of the bolder girls purposely made kueh, made cake, made ondeh ondeh. Then arranged some kind of outing or party or group dating on Saturday (bec sat no school) for their classmates to meet the boys. These pupils quite poetic and strong in Chinese. Some of the naughty secondary boys can compose funny Chinese poem / poetry, in Chinese like:-

Ai ren zai huai zhong \" meaning :-
\"Girls from nanyang high, walking on a road but swaying here & there,
Not cincentrating in studies,

ACS is just one out of some 300 schools? (got 300 or not?) Most popular schools do have students from diverse background. Even Nyps has students who require FAS.

Like what pirate said, it's the alumni who help to put the brand on popular schools, causing those who are non-alumni to scramble for a place at the schools. Yet it's these people who want the alumni to get lost. Kind of ironic there. -

Kind of ironic there.[/quote]And since the popular schools are so great and wonderful, then places thereof ought to be shared amongst the general population, and not constrained to hereditary progeny, a-la royalty. I.e., if one were a non-ACSian, non-NYPer, non-Rulanger, who odds does one have of getting one's child into those schools. And these are odds that lengthen generation by generation, where soon you really need to be Phase 2A only, and maybe even then you have to ballot.
Can these really been deemed public schools when they are reserved to a special club of children only?
The schools, as far as I can understand, belong primarily to the public, they don't belong to the alumni. The alumni may have influence, but must not dictate admissions policy, otherwise once in the door, they'll just pull up the drawbridge. -
