There will always be 1001 reasons for each phase to be removed. It just depends on which phase you don't like or view as a threat. Using smoking and oxford/Harvard as examples are irrelevant. Oxford/Harvard is by merit and financial prowess - that really does not do justice to diversity. And although I don't smoke, I find it irksome that the non-smokers are trying to force smokers into corners.


For every argument against the alumni priority, there's one for it. You have used 'diversity', 'environmental harm', 'Unfairness', 'bad practice' ... which don't hold water since phase 2B is a greater evil and worse practice that contributes to the lack of diversity, environmental harm and unfairness. And worse, it breeds elitism - an argument (also) against the alumni phase.

The more I type here, the higher the risk of getting attacked personally which irks me.

Do you include PV in P2B for breeding elitism too? For all schools or just the top schools?

I worked hard , benefitted from the school and earned your keeps, what more? My children too should benefit since I once belonged to that school ( for all you know I might have been the one who pulled down the averages :evil: )

If I feel an natural affinity for my alma matar, then i would help/get involved no matter what the measurable benefits .

I doubt if those who studied at Harvard or Oxford get such leeway. Learned scholars( 3B, pirate and others) in this forum please comment

I'm not sure if that's truly how you feel - that when you do well, it's because you had benefitted from your alma maters.

The affinity to an alma mater is the same as patriotism. Just because I am working or living abroad does not mean that I don't love my country. I am not there physically for my country for the last 30 years but that doesn't mean I should be asked to give up my right to vote or citizenship.

If I live in Bedok, I would enrol my kid into my alma mater even tho there are better schools in Bedok. It's my alma mater and I remember it for what it was - that is the reason.

Oh of course there is another reason: to escape the madness and the exhibition of the ultimate human ugliness at P1 registration at phase 2C.

I include PV in phase 2B for anyone who volunteers with the motive of wanting a place as a reward. The ones who are genuine volunteers are the ones with kids in the school already as they do not have much to gain except the inside story, which incidentally any existing parent of the school can volunteer to get too.

What's wrong with this picture?

Bear in mind those in Phase 1 are likely younger siblings of those who got in from the other phases in earlier years....and guess the predominant phase (apart from Phase 1) for the popular schools.....

And is the problem growing? Is this sustainable? Are we at the cusp of an alumni only school? Look at Henry Park in 2012. If you weren't in 2A, what do you think of your chances? Phase 2A is unconstrained, how will HPPS intake be like in 3-4 years? This is what a public school system ought to look like? This is diversity? We are throwing smoke and distractions? This is sour grapes? Life is unfair, we should just live with it?

If you want to question the right to the priority, I will want to ask why singaporeans who live abroad still can retain their citizenship despite making no contributions to Singapore and yet entitled to vote and retain all their rights as citizens - just because they happened to be born citizens? Wah Lau, unfair! Blanket citizen priority!

In the same note, alumni priority should also be limited to genuine active alumni members. If they are really connected to their alma mater, they would be actively involved whether they have kids in the school or not....

One more time, why does nostalgia of the parent grant priority to that child? I think its better you don't answer a question with a question.

By the way, in many countries, there are conditions to your right to vote, being away for a long time being one of those.

May I ask what is a school registration system that is fairest of them all?

Those with siblings in the school will get priority in phase one and most people will support this phase because most people are not nuts like me who gave birth after an eight-year difference.


To me, phase one is also unfair - to people like me. My kid has a sibling, just that she will only register for P1 when the elder one has graduated from the primary school.

It’s not fair to make people like me go through two rounds of madness. Yeah, we are the very very minority which most people don’t care, so we have to suffer the injustice silently.
