My Singaporean friend employed an Indon maid to help her in Hong Kong.

Yes, there is no such thing as transfer or return to agency…once employer cancels her permit, maid has to leave. Hong Kong employers may be willing to pay higher salaries but these maids are expected to perform efficiently. Like going to market and bringing the kids for tuition and back, housework, cooking. There is very little hand-holding. Like what my friend once said of her neighbours, ‘screw up and off she goes’.

My prev maids came to Singapore to enjoy life…and we the silly fools, are paying for their ‘tour’.

Hong Kong pays higher salary because the maids are able to value add more. I had an ex-colleague who would call the maid to start cooking her dinner before she leaves from work. This is usually from 9pm onwards. Her children would have already taken their dinner. What this means is that the maid effectively prepares 2 dinner every weeknight.

Maids in Hong Kong needs to be able to cook very well. Apart from main meals, they also enjoy \"sweet soup\" and dessert.

Their housekeeping may be easier because the houses in Hong Kong are generally smaller.

Thus far, it had been an inverse relationship between my maids' (ever-increasing pay (which is determined by the agents) and their job scope, value-add, productivity .... :slapshead:

one of my maids once told me this…to work in singapore, study english for

1-2 months…to work in hongkong, study for 6 months bcos have to understand english and cantonese. my hongkonger friend told me the maids in hk have to know how to run the household efficiently and buy the incense/stuff for chinese 3rd and 7th month…housework easy peasy bcos the flats are so small…use the octopus card to go marketing and get scolding from fierce stall owners.

Funny... I though HK pays higher salary because don't have to pay levy. The value add is practically free.

One word to describe MOM - HOPELESS

I have once read a newspaper article about what LKY said and this was pinned on MOM's notice board.

LKY said we must treat maids well if not, many years down the road when they go back to their home country, they will talk bad about Singapore to their children. LKY said in the future, when their children grow up, and if we have to deal with them (like if they work for their government), Singapore will get into trouble with them.

SO! MUST TREAT THEM RIGHT! :slapshead:

Although I agree that we should treat another human being well, maid or not, I think Singapore maid employers are getting the worst ever deal. We are at the mercy of everyone, MOM, maid agency, and maids. There is practically no recourse for us.

Singaporeans are at the mercy of maids.

We can eat food spiked with urine, washing detergent and be killed…but if maids kill or harm employers, fingers point at employers for not feeding maids or else claim maids are under-aged, and claim diminished responsibility or mischief.

Maids come to Singapore to enjoy life, expenses fully paid.

Don’t give them off day…we are considered inhuman.
Give them off day, they come back with brains washed…‘why my friend no need to wash car? Why my friend got a room all to herself? Why this, why that?’

My answer, ‘why you don’t work for your friend’s employer?’

All you need to get into TROUBLE is: Maid go out to complain to MOM, Embassy and so-called NGOs who think they are so "Kind" and "Helpful".

These maids are all told to call MOM when they need help...then we employers have who to call for help???

Sometimes I wonder if we employers are first class citizens or the maids.
When they run away, employers are first to be blamed. These maids are fantastic liars. They eat like gluttons and yet always claim they are not given food. Brother's Myanmar maid drinks soup like nobody's biz...no initiative to do work, but when food is nice, there's no stopping either.

My mom-in-law's Myanmar maid eats like a glutton also. The amount of rice she eats each meal can be twice my portion. Before joining, everything can eat. But now said she gets headache and will only eat veggies cos she is a Buddhist! (I have nothing against Buddhist as I am one myself). But very fed up becos everything 'can' before employing her and then now so difficult.

More ridiculous is that one day, she finished her housework early by around 11am (actually, it is usually the case everyday as there is little work for her to do and then 'eng' 'eng' for the rest of the day as there is only my mom-in-law at home who don't need her to look after). She then speaks on the phone for 1 hour and then went to dress up and said she wanted to go to her sister's maid employer to take her sister's place cos her sister cannot cope. Really 'buay tahan\" as she is an ex-Malaysian maid and was not able to cope there. What makes her thinks she can cope at another household, and what makes her think her sister's employer want her?? :slapshead: :slapshead:

Who the hell she thinks she is, anyhow do what she wants?? :nunchuk:
