DS was like your DD2. He was a clean freak. He refuses to go to any public toilet and that boy and control his bladder amazingly well. At restaurants he will refused to sit on any of the chairs, insisting on sitting on our laps. At home he refused to step into the toilet if the floor is wet or so much as have a strand of hair on it. When eating, he must clean his mouth each time he eats a mouthful. He will never go out of the house barefooted, will never step on a grass patch. This obsessive trait showed in his work as well. In K1 when writing, he could not get the dash to be perfectly parallel to the line in the exercise book and he was writing and erasing and writing and erasing again and again. In the end he worked himself up until he ended up crying.

DH and I had to keep telling him it is ok, don't have to be so hard on himself, relax a bit. As for the cleanliness part, we had to stop him from cleaning his mouth so often at meal times, be firm with him about not sitting on our laps, sometimes he would choose to eat standing. When out playing, we insist on sitting on the grass and going barefoot and if he doesn't do that, he can only sit on the bench and watch us play. Eventually he got over some of his obsession. Come to think about it, I think we over corrected cos he is now pretty untidy and careless.
