Any recommendation for child who is weak in compo and compre?

      Hi Honesty,

I was in the same situation 3 weeks ago (check my thread under my userid). I realised my child was fearful of comp & hated Chinese. I had to basically 'drag' him to his previous tuition centre.

Feeling desperate, I decided to seek help from Thetrees123 since I got nothing to lose. My son is now motivated & interested in Chinese.

I'm not sure if he can do well for SA1 since we seek help just weeks before the exam but I'm sure if he continues to be motivated & interested, he should be able to do well for SA2.

Think forcing the kid to study is short term solution. Being motivated & interested should be the way to good.

I wish you luck & success in doing so. 😂

Thanks westie123! The current China-chinese private tutor (with many years of experience) kept telling me I bought too difficult assessment books which my DD does not know alot of the words in there. She has been teaching my DD since last December.

There was once I told her to help my DD with school compo writing. After the lesson she said my DD did all the work herself and she merely correct some of the words in the sentences. Few days later, I received back the
compo from school with comments stated: Lack of content! :stupid:

I told myself that I will see how my DD's SA1 result and then determine if I should still keep her....
Hi Honesty,

Dun mention. We r on the same journey 😄

          Hi ichunleo,

My kid started berries when he was in n1 (the youngest class berries offer). Ok leh, he can follow and learn. see results after a few lessons.

Specifically for k1 and k2 classes at berries only (since I have never tried other schools), there are definitely more classes at k1 and k2 levels. I think there is no need to try the hot time slots eg weekend mornings as the wait list is very long. But the weekday afternoon classes are available. At times, weekend at odd timings eg 6.45pm or 3pm may have slots.

My kid is 3.5yo and he speak mostly English. When I speak to him in Mandarin, he will get frustrated and want me to stop speaking mandarin. Should I send him to Chinese enrichment asap? Urgently needs your advise.

            Thanks!

I would but best to check the programs. If it's going to be all papers and writing, I think it would make things worst.

This sounds exactly like my DS, previously. Yes it is difficult to get seats to Chinese enrichment classes at this age. I've been trying for Berries for 2 years with no luck but luckily I found an alternative online and it works perfectly for him, since he is glued to the computer.

He now uses an interactive online chinese learning software from China.
Developed for children age 2-10 years old, also used in the schools in China. It is fun and entertaining.

Introduction is important. I used that as a treats to him for good behaviour. I told him it is a fun game and nothing more. Then when he got in, he complained how come it is in Chinese. :? But of course, I told him, it is developed in China and everyone speaks mandarin there. Then he learns daily slowly just by playing the game. I just sit back and relax, anything he don't understand, I'll explain. Now he can \"talk back\" in mandarin and \"join in\" whenever he finds my conversation with Daddy is interesting. Daddy and I converse in mandarin 98% of the time.

                  Hi,

My DD is with Berries since she’s K1 and now she’s P3.
She used to love attending Berries but recently she told me the teacher teach too fast and she couldn’t understand. After talking to the teacher, she mention there are many activities for P3 she needs to complete within a lesson therefore, she has to teach fast.

Though my DD is doing very well in her Chinese SA1, I decided to withdraw her from Berries as she show negative feeling towards attending class at Berries. I’m now looking for another chinese enrichment programmes or tutor who can teach chinese enrichment in a fun way and also to teach my Sec 1 DS chinese at the same time.
Would appreciate if anyone could recommend me 1.

I had the same problems and experiences!

I don’t teach or speak to DD (2007) in Chinese still I enroll her into the kindergarten (2011 – N2, 4 yo), after 6 months of her kindergarten, I tried to speak to DD in mandarin, DD told me: she don’t understand what I was talking about! she doesn’t like Chinese!

I have no other better choice but to send DD for the Chinese tuition class (July 2011), DD speak to the Chinese teacher in English for the first few lessons, no homework for her tuition class, after 2 to 3 months, DD started to speak to her Chinese teacher and me in simple mandarin.

DD (K2 - 6yo) now prefers Chinese to English programs, i.e 喜羊羊 , 蜡笔小新, 鲁冰花… she continues attending P2 chinese tuition.

DD has found Chinese easy to learn and interesting, DD always likes to give me Chinese spelling! or test me: 爸爸你知道这个字怎样拼嗎? 第几声? :frustrated:

DD has weekly Chinese spelling from the Chinese tuition class (2012 - 2013), I spent about 5 to 10 minus with her for the Chinese spelling daily, she did well in her Chinese. I have been using mandarin in our daily conversation with DD ever since.
