You have no recourse if she does not return. My maid cannot write home (though we cannot connect to the phones of her family) because she does not even know her full address.


My previous maid who is serious about renewing contract after her break allowed me to hold on to part of her monies in Singapore.

Your maid will consider herself as "experienced" regardless of work performance and will feel entitled to a higher pay. This will be between yourself and the maid.

My maid is very forgetful and slow too. As my kids are older, I close both my eyes, she only needs to do housekeeping. Even cooking is done by my mum. If need be, am prepared to cater food. We are already eating out during the weekends to work around her weaknesses.

Of course, there are some who are naturally slow.


As for forgetfulness, you can always get your maid to make a check list and list down the things that she needs to do. Some are simply giving excuses and doing it slowly. However, if any rectification needs to be done, it has to be done early

Mine is with me for close to 2 months now, 1st month very good in house chores but 2nd mth started cutting corners. I kept quiet and monitored so she assumed that I did not find out. Seriously I did not purposely do any spot check but unfortunately for her out of coincidence I found out about the chores she did not do well which are really obvious. Eg. Grim built up on both stainless less stove and induction cooker, toys seem under the couch (meant she did not sweep or mop underneath), spoilt my clothings but still iron and kept quiet, schedule of chores not followed. :frustrated:


I spoke to her the other day and asked her to repeat the instructions I have got her to write down in her notebook and she is \"smart\" to skip a few of them. She tried to find ridiculous excuses for the shortfall but I told her off in a nice way for her to buck up. As expected she showed her black face the next day, not setting table, not helping wif the kids and \"worked very hard\" to finish all her undone chores.

I am prepared that she will chut more patterns after her loan is up and after she go for her off days. By the way her English is still atrocious despite repeated encouragement to speak more thus learn more and I start to suspect she is pretending since we have caught her singing songs to cartoons & toys.

If the maid is starting to cut corners, just ask her to repeat her specific chore until she get it right. Once you allow her to get away with it, it will happen again and again and forever again. Just need to make sure she understands your quality chores.

It’s really now or never, so I rather put up with her expected black face but still get her to do it properly. I even demonstrated myself fo show her how to do it. I can’t imagine closing one eye now, by 6mths later, it will be horrible.

Just need to spot check, do not need to keep all your attention to her. Normally, the maid will know how to do. Demonstration is just making it easier for her to manipulate you. Even if you do demonstration it should be a small part or area. As much as possible just give verbal instructions.

Certain things can be tricky to spot check e.g changing and washing of water pitcher for the kids, daily cleaning of couch etc since these are performed in the morning when everyone is still in bed. But definitely randomly check had to be done. The next is to get IP camera installed so we can checked back on wat she does in the morning and occasions when she is left alone with the baby.

I demonstrate with verbal instruction so that she have no excuse that she do not understand my instruction and no I don't perform the whole chore but show her wat is to be done. Verbal instructions can be tough to verify if she does get the right picture since her communication skills are less than basic.

I only know the SG side. Just buy airticket for her. If she intends to come back, she will need her work permit with her when she comes back to SG. You can get a refund on the foreign worker levy. just go to MOM website online and apply to get a refund on the period she is away.

On the Myanmar side, I am unsure; best to call up the agency and enquire.
