Thanks, Jennifer. Indeed, competitive swimming is a great sport and absolutely not a waste of time. Else I wouldn't be lobbying for a proper swim team at PHPPS in the first instance. Was just talking to another swim mum from ACS. The whole school would even unite and pray for the swim team before the competition. You can just imagine how encouraged the boys there must feel. Even the parents feel good. I can't help noting the contrast especially since PHPPS is also a Christian school. The kids don't particularly encourage nor cheer for each other even at the swim meet(unlike other meets eg athletics etc where there is a proper team) In fact, fellow swimmers for the most part don't even really know each other. The teacher just sits there and takes attendance, without nary a word of encouragement either. Year after year its the same. There is no school spirit. Just swim, hopefully win, and disappear without a bang or whimper. Not sure what people think CCA or primary school education is about, but PHPPS just missed a wonderful opportunity in fostering team spirit amongst these bunch of kids. Great for those who made it to the finals. But for those who didn't, not sure if they thought it was a worthwhile experience, except for some kids who might enjoy missing 2 days of school!TravelMummy:

Competitive sports is demanding physically as well as mentally. Am sure every child in competitive sports will benefit in some ways or other, regardless of whether a medal or recognition is given.
It becomes very sad if every hobby taken up has only 1 purpose - DSA.
Just my humble opinion: Let's celebrate efforts instead of a narrow view of DSA -

The school has no swim team, since my time. No problem about it if your kids already in a swim school. The only time you need PH is during inter primary. All other events go thru swim schools/coaches.

In some school where there's strong support for swimming, you will feel good only if your kids are the age group top 3 swimmers. Else, even if the kids meet the qualifying times, the school can decide not to field them. That happened to one of my ds swim mate (faster than him but cannot go as other boys in the school even faster). That is even more demoralizing, for kids & parents. And sure no chance to DSA if that's the target.
In PH, as long as you want to swim, can go. Even 3 swimmers a few years ago, they also send teacher. Better than some schools, told parents too few swimmers, not going to sign up for their kids. (happened to another swim mate).
As for honouring the kids, I think they did that during assembly. They asked the swimmers to stand up one of the day, announced the result and everyone clapped for them. Very nice of them, I thought.
Anyway, it's a happy time for PHPPS swimming. Let's wait for next Tuesday good news. They don't pray in school for swimmers, we can activate the PH kiasu parents. :rahrah:

When I was young-er, I watched Junie Sng on telly and she won gold after gold at the SEA games. She even broke 2 Asian records. I felt so good for her.

One more sport to promote here: Waterpolo
Boys (& girls) interested in water polo invited to join ds in their training. Need to be able to swim at least a few full laps. Training is at toa payoh pool, 1.5-2hr each time, sat afternoon & Sunday morning. Using the deep pool so will have to tread water for at least an hour, good fitness training. Good for DSA to good sec school. P4 & below this year can go for selection to u-12 national team next year & represent Singapore in oversea match in June.
If enough from PH join, can form a team to play in inter school also. Anyone interested?? -
Totally agree Joee Yee. Lets all pray hard and cheer hard on Tue and hope to see some medals for PHPPS!
