      ...

Another teacher got pregnant, we marched to the principal's office again and asked for replacement. Because pregnant means during 9 mths, there will some absence here and there...

Should pregnancy be a valid reason to request for change of teacher? No doubt there could be increased absence due to medical conditions, but would that not defeat the point that women in Singapore have been fighting for: fair employment terms and no discrimination due to pregnancies?

Agree that this is somewhat contradicting. Once a teacher gets pregnant, there should be a relief teacher immediately assigned, not wait until teacher is expecting then donno where to find teachers to take over. When delivery happens at beginning of the year is even more strange. New year/term just started, you hear teacher always not around, then suddenly change of teachers then you know teacher has gone to deliver. The teacher taking over have to rush like mad to complete syllables before kids sit for tests. Then again, teachers are mostly MOE assigned, so donno if this is problem with the school or problem with MOE :scratchhead: ??

Also complicated if kids sitting for PSLE is handled by lady teacher who 'suddenly' got pregnant at beginning of the year. By the time kids have to sit for PSLE then teacher not around to help? :imdrowning:

Speaking in general terms, not specific to RP.

Most of our kids have no problem as all have been covered by their tutors outside  . Indirect outsourcing.. :rotflmao:

We were straight forward, pregnant 9 mths plus 3 mths confinement at that time equal to one year. Must as well don’t teach already. We even requested a male, single or menopause teachers. The following year, our wish was granted at P5 and P6 . Initial pregnancy was worst. Mon came, tues and wed absent, thur came, fri absent again.

Agree, cos very unethical & selfish act leh. For example, the teacher is very good so the kiasu parents quickly 'grab' her to teach their kids. Then when they realise she is pregnant, they immediately 'dump' her. What if all other classes also think alike, then this poor preggie will be out of job for 9 months. Like that who dares to pro-create? Or Govt should give teacher 9 months paid leave for pregnancy?

Our kids’ class kenna one teacher at lower primary at that time. Beginning of the year for 2 weeks already absent so many days. We knew that this could be pregnancy. So when the kids reached upper primary levels, we made sure the history didn’t repeat again.

At that time, the principal told us that moe had fixed the teachers’ allocation. Couldnot find any replacement. How frustrated we were.

We went thru high and low with the school. Since we chose to put kids in the school, just support the school mah.

You said you are working professional, do you think you are a perfect employee mah? Your boss and colleagues like your working style mah?

If i am yr boss, i will fire you for spending too much company time surfing the forum. Unproductive employee.

Interesting to know that some parents feel that they have the right to control the school’s management of staff and deployment of teachers. Once a teacher is pregnant, she’s suddenly incompetent to teach the children. What’s more alarming is the fact that these parents seem so proud of their proactive approach to MARCH in or CALL in to ask for a replacement once a teacher from the principal.

Just like any company, look at the big picture. If a school has a fixed number od teachers, means it has a fixed number of teachers. Period. A school is at the mercy of the teaching pool provided by MOE and the government only provides funds to employ a relief once the teacher is off for her maternity, not a moment earlier. We should MARCH to the principal’s office soon and tell him to have one or two spare teachers loitering around the staff room to deploy the moment a teacher shows positive on the pregnancy test kit.

You can get some Tom, Dick or Harry (well probably you’d prefer that since they are all males and can’t get pregnant) and just send them to Rivervale Primary to take over from the incompetent pregnant woman.

If this is how some parents act, showing how their way is the only way and their thoughts are the only rightful thoughts, it’s no wonder that we are breeding a generation of self-centred and selfish individuals.

For the parent(s) who MARCHED into the principal’s office and asked for a replacement, I sincerely hope that you do not have any daughters. Karma works in mysterious ways. You may no longer plan to have any more offsprings but someone close to you might. Then you will feel first hand how it feels to be on the receiving end of this preferential treatment.

(I did not use the "Quote" function as I do not want to single people out. It’s not cowardice. It’s called manners. Something that some of you should practice once and a while. For the children’s sake, I do hope they never chance upon this forum and read some of the things written here. They would be surprised to know that it came from the people that they call Mum and Dad.)

不好意思, I AM the boss. But my secretary will be on leave tomorrow so I will be quite busy for a while.

Please be reminded that we parents must always 灌输 good moral values to our kids in order that they can be compassionate people who will contribute selflessly to our society when they grow up. Having high IQ alone is very dangerous. These days we have seen too many reports on crimes committed by high profile people.

                  Anyway, thanks for sharing ha.

Yes, Karma works in mysterious way  . I think that will apply to leaders and educators who have drawn tax payers money and yet do not deliver their duties.

Thus, I always impart moral values to my child. Though academic is important, but characters building is even more crucial, as it's life time.😄

I do recall someone writing about how teachers have an unspoken rule about planning their delivery to coincide with long holidays. I do empathize with teachers. No wonder so many leave the profession after having their own children - --- (then join back when their children are ready to enter primary school again so as to have the best resources to help them 🦆 )

I do not have enough info about how MOE distributes their resources to suggest how such a situation can be improved, but I do feel for students who are sitting for their critical exams. A teacher who is often on leave during the critical year is not something that parents and students can sit back easily and be empathetic about. This is especially so for parents who do not have tuition teachers (outsourcing) to fall back on. Even in organizations, most bosses will engaging contract workers or temp staff to start before the permanent staff goes on leave so as to get the former oriented and be ready to take over when the time comes.

                        Another good post.

In other words the female employee who knows their pregnancy will affect their performance, should make voluntarily and automatic temporary 'exit'.

Some women tend to be in a weaker side, even experience bleeding. Some in order to save the baby, have to lie on the bed for six mths.

P5 and P6 are very crucial years. Must have the commitment from the teachers before taking the responsibility to lead upper primary levels.

Occupation such as air-stewardess? what happened when it comes to pregnancy.
