      Does he like money? πŸ˜‚

Use the 10 cent coins and 1 cent coins to teach him, then you can teach this concept and money at the same time.

1 cent coins quite useless these days, so might as well turn it into teaching resources. πŸ™‚

          nkthen:
...It seems to me that he understands it by (italics is his thinking):

          3 tens 4 ones = (OK... I just write \"3\" and \"4\", correct!)
          5 tens 2 ones = __ ones (I just write \"5\" and \"2\", correct!)

He doesn't seem to understand the concept of a group of tens and a group of ones, etc.
          ...
Apart from using ice-cream sticks and coins, you can also test what you suspect his \"thinking\" is, by asking him questions like:

What is 3 tens Plus 11 ones?

If he is thinking the right way, he will compose 1 ten 1 one from the 11 ones, then add the tens.

I found putting it into columns helped my daughter. Draw three columns - hundreds, tens and ones then put the numbers in the correct columns. She’s in P2 now so they are doing 3 digit numbers but the principle is the same.

I use the ikea Mula Abascus. With rows of l0 beads, it is easy to show each row of 10 ones is 1 ten. Then start playing around with it using different rows of beads; like the yellow row of 10s is the same as the red row of 10s. Etc etc.
