She worked for us for 8 years. Initially when she joined, she was very hardworking and never talk to other maids whenever she meets any of these maids outside. But after renewing her WP for 3 times, I find her attitude change. Lazy and like to aruge back. Even worse last year sept 2007 when I asked her to go and fetch my elder son back. She began to mix around with other maid in my boy’s school. Started to tell lies, my mother-in-law (MIL) said whenever she wants to go and fetch my son, she will take very long time to change and tide up her hair. getting more vain. She can even aruged with my MIL. In may this year, a neigbour’s maid on the same floor at my MIL’s house recommend her to work in HK. This neigbour maid is working for an agent in Singapore. Her job is to help the agent sources for experience maid to work in HK at a commission. When she got a job in HK, she lied to me and my hubby that her mother is sick need her to go back immediately. So no choice I have to sent her back. I only found out about her job in HK when I employed my second maid and again this idot neigbour’s maid said the same thing to my second maid by telling her after she repay her loan if she want to work in HK she got lobang but has to pay her S$100. My second maid told me. I know that in HK the maid get double their pay here. But at least she shd finish the contract. Instead she chose to tell lies. Never employ her otherwise you will have nightmares

She is a great liar. Before I employed her, I told her that I don’t allow my maid to carry Handphone. She said OK that’s why I employ her. On the second day, she requested me to buy Handphone. Reason given she wants to call back home to report her safety. I told her first time I will allow her to use my home phone to call which she did. After calling, she started to cry. When I asked her why, she refused to tell. Very emotional maid. She eats alot. I don’t mind her eating if she works. But she still have the cheek to complaint to the Agency that I’m not giving her enough food. I eat 3 meals per day. She eats 5 meals per day. In the morning when she wake up, she took breakfast at my house before doing housework. When I go to work I put her and my son at my mother-in-law’s (MIL) house. My MIL told me she told breakfast again at 10 something in the morning followed by lunch, tea-break in the after and then dinner. She still crumbled not enough food to eat. Unfortunately, my house do not have the habit of eating super. She even complaint to the agency I did not pay her monthly salary of $20. I told the agency she owing me money how to pay her salary. When we go to the supermarket, she asked to buy biscuits, noodles. I told her no problem but she has to eat when I buy for her. I eat household brand which is NTUC noodle. But she chose a much more expensive brand of noodle and also biscuit. I told her if she chose the more expensive brand she has to pay herself. If I as an employer I can get household brand I don’t see whey she cannot eat. She wants to eat all the good stuff. In the end she paid herself. She told my MIL her slipper is spoilt and got no more shoes. Out of pity, my MIL bot her a pair of shoe. When she left, I saw 2 pairs of shoes in her luggages and another 2 pairs of her own slippers outside my shoe cabinet. What a Liar. Also she has high esteem and ego. She told me her husband daily salary is only S$3/-. When we went to the supermarket, she wanted to buy a pkt of envelopes cost $3/- per pkt which she asked me to deduct from her salary. I told her she can choose the plain white envelope which cost $0.90/- and I’ll help her to get some airmail label from the post office to stick on it. She said OK but she complained to my hubby that I don’t let her buy the expensive brand. I was so angry by helping her to save money she accused me of not letting her buy what she wants to buy. She worked for me 3 months, she already sent out more than 10 letters. I bot for her 20 stamps at $0.65 each. She was also approached by my neighbour’s maid to work in HK which promised double salary her. When I sent her back, I check all her things in the lugguage, I so she wrote a note to the agency asking the agency to help her find a job in HK. I find that all these maids are simple-minded. If HK is so good, my neigbour’s maid will be the first to go. Am I rite??? What I understand from my HK friend, in HK althought the maid get double the pay here ($680 - $700) but the employer does not provide accomodation. So these maidss have to look for their own accomodation which is very expensive. In the end still come back to square one. I heard in HK, if the employer doesn’t like the maid they can kick the maid out of the house and also dump their belongings outside the house. But you can’t do this in Singapore or risk our $5000 bond. hahaha

              Question.

If your maid had late breakfast (9am) and didn't want to eat at lunchtime (cos not hungry at 1pm), but later had some snacks (french fries, nuggets, fish balls) at 5pm, would you ask her to eat the very minute dinner is ready (time is 6.30pm and you are visiting your parents' place and your siblings and their families are there as well and nobody has started to eat)?

Assuming maid proceeded to eat (before her own mdm has eaten), she digs her used utensils into the dishes, ignoring the serving spoon. Anything wrong with this?

Many maids do not have any common sense, don't expect them to know what is right or wrong.

As employers, it is very important that we tell the maid what is the correct behaviour expected in our household. It is best to come out with a list of houserules for the maid, so the maid knows what is expected of them. Every household is different, what is acceptable in one household, may not be tolerated in another household.

I always think that it is a bad idea for employers to allow their maids help themselves with the food. If the maid eats the same food as the employer, the employer should always take out a reasonable portion of the food for the maid. I have heard of maid who cooked 5 fish for the family, then ate 4 fish by herself. The employer was unhappy with the maid, but then why allow the maid to have the freedom in the first place ?

Check out my blog about how to manage a maid.

thanks for the link, i copied the houserules in a note book for my new replacement maid and read to her…
btw, would you accept a maid that is really short. The info given to me was wrong… she is much shorter than the bio i was given. ABt 1.48. She needs to jump to close my car boot, and use a stool to dry my dishes… and she probably need a high stool to hang my clothes.
Oh… her top front tooth are all dentures…the agent said they will go feedback supplier…i am lost for words… just hope she is a lovely person. This agency is such an experience.

Following this thread of discussion, I am wondering if we are too "gniao’ with our maids. I know of many ang mohs who pay their maids $500 to $600 a month, let their maids off every sunday, and even give the maids their own room with TV and air-con. Of course, the maids are much happier working for them.

I personally don’t approve of pp who abuse their maids. I know of someone who has been charged with maid abuse. Amongst one of the many things he did, he starved the maid when he felt that her work was not up to standard.

I know there are many complaints about maids but I do think it works both ways and am wondering if they behave negatively because we don’t treat them well.

For those getting your new maid (or transfer maid) from the agency, I would like to advise that you check if she has head lice. To be on the safe side, buy a bottle of treatment liquid from the pharmacy and make her wash her hair with that for the first few days. My new maid requested for a new pillow and i realised that she finished using the bottle of insecticide within a week. She told me she suspect that the previous maid had head lice and it was a very common problem at the agency as all the maids sleep together in a small room that the agency rented. It was then that I realised how my dd may have gotten head lice some months back when the previous maid joined us. I thought she got it from her friend in school as none of us (fortunately) had it.

                        Let me share my experience...

I just sent back my maid of 2yrs in June. We wanted to renew her contract but she wanted to go home. She was really a good maid.....she practically ran my household from looking after the kids to cleaning the house to keeping track of my \"inventories\" at home. She was more like our butler than our maid!

So then I had no other choice but to get a new maid as my mum cannot take are of two young children, a toddler and a newborn with no extra pair of hands. I had the new maid for about 4mths and I finally gave up. She had no clue on how to do housework nor control the kids! We found out later that she used to follow her husband travelling as he is truck driver. That explains why she doesn't know how to run a house!

Then we recently got another maid who claimed that she has worked in M'sia for 3yrs and HKG for 1+yr. But she is super slow! The good thing about her is she can control the children. However, she lacks common sense. Just the other day, I lost my temper @ the supermarket! I told her to get salad while the kids and I get other dry stuff and we decided on the meeting point. She couldn't find the vege section! The frustrating part is that she went looking for me instead of asking the people around where the vege section was!!!??? I mean DUH! I thought that was it...then the next wave of frustrations sets in. She went off to look for a basket and then came back and ask how many I wanted?? I was like \"HELLOOOOOOO!!! How many ppl in the house eats salad?\" AARGHHHHH!!! :x

Sometimes I just wonder is it just me??? :? My hubby said that my expectations are high. But my most basic criteria was to just have common sense! Is that too much to ask for? I can live with one being slow but I cannot stand it when someone doesn't use their brains!
