Lu,
Hope it helps.
Just to share my experience.
I have been searching ways of helping my son to read since he turned 3 last year. During the 10 months period, (he is now 3yr 10mth old), i spent sleepless night to read through useful forums/blogs to learn from successful parents.
I constantly revised my method. When method A wasn’t work, i tried method B untill i find a way that suits him.
I believe that there must be a way to help the children to read at young age.
I was right brain believer. Therefore i introduced Glenn Doman method by flashing words + encyclopedia cards. I was very upset when i see him couldn’t recognised a word and picture after trying for couple of months.
I got to accept the fact that flashing card is not for him. It is more suitable for young baby. Then i slowly realised that reading, explanation, outdoor play, interaction, hands on are all important skills. I overlooked all of them by just flashing.
I guess must be too much flashing that causes my son hated words so much. He wasn’t keen to read at all when i take out the readers or phonics card. He refused to read out.
Then, i stopped all readers and flashing. Just continue to read to him , play nursery rhymes and arts and craft, drawing, coloring. When he was in mood, he can do up to 2-3 crafts in an hour.
He wasn’t keen to read when i take out Peter and Jane on 1st day of Jan10. I ddin’t force him but illustrate the picture of Peter. Then he just fall in love in P&J.
Now, he reads few pages daily. What a good start for the year ! -

Yes, he's in K1 at PCF.Mummyof2,
Your son is K1? In PAP school?
-
Hi charmaine-chong
I think our approach is quite similar. Except that I leave the arts and crafts to outsiders, as I'm not artistically inclined. You may also want to consider bringing your son to watch plays. I have been doing so for almost a year and now he loves to watch plays. It's also a good way to introduce him to some books like the Gingerbraed Man. It helps to make the story real

Hi mummy of 2,
I brought my son for some events like barney, sponge bob, the green sheep, Tanglin Mall to play bubble bath, feeling of snowing. He didn't get excited at all.
We brought him to zoo, birdpark, butterfly and reptiles as well. He looked bored.
He is more keen on circus which i just found out. Physically very fit.
We imported a kid's car which is very big from China, cost about SGD230. Its function is like a real car. He drives well. He knows how to reverse, u-turn.... after tried once or twice.
I am not artistic as well. Therefore, i often spend as much time as i can to get ideas from internet. The most taxing part is searching and prepration work.
I am considering to send him to neigbourhood centre for drawing class. He became interested to draw and color after we did lots of arts and craft.
These are some pieces we did last month.

Wow, his art pieces look great
You must have spent a lot of time and effort on research and preparation. My son attend lessons at Kidsart (Tiong bahru) and i notice that he can control his pencil better now. Also he now likes to do tracing exercises. -
Cool work your DS did, Charmaine_chong! :celebrate:
