Which brand of pens are the best to be used for psle?

For my PSLE last year, I used a Sarasa Clip 0.5 blue pen. I feel that most pens are okay and it does not really make a difference on which brand of pen you use. It is best to use the pen he's most comfortable with though. I was a fan of Pilot G2 pens a few years ago, but I found Sarasa pen very very easy to write with, doesn't bleed and writes smoothly.

Personally, I have several bad experiences with 0.38 Signo DX pens. I find the Signo pens more fragile than other pens, the thinner the tip, the more fragile it is. I drop pens quite often unintentionally, my 0.38 Signo DX pen's tip always get spoilt after 1 or 2 drop and I could not use it even though the ink is still very full. I would recommend avoiding it for PSLE in case halfway the pen drops ( roll down by itself / accidentally hit it with elbow etc. ) and it stops working properly. However, if you are really careful with pens and love the Signo DX pens a lot ( like my friend ), go ahead and use them. ^^

Avoid Coleto pens for long writing, the ink is very little and won't last through the whole PSLE, I also realized it bleeds through the page behind when pressed harder ( like when drawing dots ).

I do not agree with getting a 0.7 tip if your handwriting is small, the ink will be thick and your letters will end up sticking together. If your handwriting is really tiny, getting a thin tip ( 0.38 / 0.28 ) will help a lot as it gives you more space in between the letters, making the words easier to read.

I feel that 0.7 tip is too thick and is not suitable for older children ( from upper primary onwards ) as that is when you develop your own handwriting ( that more or less stays with you permanently ) and learn to control the size of your writing well.

Now, I use a 0.5 Signo pen, it is not scratchy at all and is much less fragile than the 0.38 ones. I can drop them 5 times and they still work fine.

By the way, if you don't like how normal highlighters bleed through the page, get dry ones. I am now using some Soft Pastel Essenti Stick Dry Highlighters that I bought from Popular for $3.90 ( 3 highlighters ). They work a bit like crayons, but not messy at all.

For highlighters you should use the smiggle britestix highlighter, it is like crayons and the colors look really nice (green, yellow and orange). Also, you should use blue pilot super gel 0.7. At least 4 people in my class who have nice handwriting have that pen. The ink is also really good and smooth and it rarely leaks although it finishes pretty fast. Also, smiggle pens are really good as they are inky and smooth as well but the ink finishes EXTREMELY fast & they are quite expensive. I used one for my exams (EL, MA, CL, SC, HCL) and the ink is almost finished. But the color of the highlighter is considerably very nice but again, it finishes very fast.

I use the 0.38 uniball signo dx pen. It's a gel pen but the ink doesn't runout too fast and it doesn't smudge. The ink is thin so it's good for people with big handwriting :imanisland:

Why? You mean yr son did his sa1 using pencils and the school allowed him to. To me, it is a concern. Perhaps, you may want to ask him to write in ink for sa2.

Jedamum, agree with PiggyLala. Usually schools will not allow pencils in exams from P5 onwards. Better to get him used to using pens.


We tried many brands, different point size, different correction tapes.
Pilot G2 0.7 worked the best for my son. The thicker lines and dark colour seemed to help him focused better (less transfer errors). For Chinese, he used the Pilot G2 0.5 as a compromise.

Try, then whatever you decided, start using them to get used to them. Don’t try anything NEW on PSLE days, whether pens, correction tapes, food etc We use the PSLE stationery case for prelim …trial run.

Yes, you should. They will take some time to adapt. You can see the difference in handwriting as well. Start now at least for the work alloted by you at home.
