Mine goes for group tuition. I will just coach her twice/thrice a week for anything she asks. Her CL oral exam is always   She still cannot hold a 5-mins conversation in 'pure' mandarin. Tat's why we say she is still a 'eat potato' girl. Before K2, she does not speak a single chinese word. When she first joined K2(in Sept) in Singapore, her CL tr started her from N1 level.
It is still a difficult language for my son as he hardly uses it outside school lessons. Even with individual tuition which he started in P2, he just missed out on band 1.janet_lee88:
Hi IJJ,
Chinese was a foreign language for my boy when he was in P1. My worry then was whether he will pass. That was the time he had group tuition. Then a friend advised me to get individual Chinese tuition for him, esp Pei Hwa uses Higher Chinese.
Dyh, your son did not score band 1 for CL, still can get into Fa3, his other 2 subjects must be really good.

What does he think? If he think he can cope and want to continue with HCL, then should encourage him on. Get some help if nec. Otw, IMO, its not a big deal to forgo it and choose CL. PSLE compulsory for CL only right? HCL marks only help if he is gg to opt for SAP sec.My son doesn't speak a word of Mandarin out of lessons. I'm keeping a close tab on his Chinese and English.
He will be in P5 next year, and I'm at a loss if he should continue with HCL or take CL as 2nd language. At P4 this year, I'm relieved and happy if he can get Band 2 for all his subjects...the high side of Band 2 though. -
I am not the ‘pushy’ kind of parent…because I know my son’s limitations.
So far he is still ok, but will see how it goes later. Will be able to tell if he can continue with HCL or drop it next year.
However, thanks for your advise. -

Well, at least you know Chinese well and can coach. For me, i have to refer to dictionary myself when he asked questions. i did not learn Chinese in school.Mine goes for group tuition. yeah, he has no problem with his other subjects.
Your daughter is smart to be able to catch up CHinese fast since K2. -

Oh no, I din mean tat. In fact , at some point, I am a pushy mom. Sometimes, my kids just need some 'kicks' in their butts to move them. :lol:I am not the 'pushy' kind of parent...because I know my son's limitations.

What I meant was if there is interest for him to pursue HCL, its great, but if doing HCL is gg to affect other subjects and he is not keen, he is not losing out much by reverting to CL, IMO.

And btw, I use dictionary alot too. -
Kids do need an occasional kick in the butt to get moving. It’s the start of week 3 and I think it’s time for my boy to wake up.
I am struggling with HCL too, spending a lot of time reading his books or some handbooks.
For my daughter, I do not want to go through it again. That’s why we may not want to put her in the same school as ther older sibling. -
Dyh,
Your child is in Faith 3. That means his HCL is in the high end of Band 2 and his 2 other subjects are very good.

Hi Mummies,
Last year, there were 2 top students for PSLE from Pei Hwa. Both scored 280 points, 2nd child got 270 points. Wow, really close.
Dyh,
Your child is in P3 this year. There will be a GEP screening test. If your son gets into Gifted class, will you put him in a school with Gifted program ? -

that's a very big \"IF\". it is top 1% of the population and chance is very slim. so i am not thinking too much about it and have not made any decision. i'm curious why did u ask?
