My daughter just attended a briefing for Yr 3 OBS next year. They were given a VERY long list of items to bring, including a number which we might never use again. Can those who have attended this before tell me what we might be able to dispense with? Or would be willing to give/sell items which they used for their OBS and don’t need anymore?

      Some additional questions:
What sunglasses can specs wearers get? It’s listed as ‘compulsory’ but powered ones would be expensive.
Can the girls do some laundry at the campsite? They are asked to bring about 4 sets of most clothing, but surely they can wash and dry clothes from the first couple of days?
I see they are also asked to bring a toilet roll, drinking water, fire lighters and other items which I would have thought would make sense for the camp to buy in bulk. At this rate, they girls will have to bring a large suitcase each!

      Any comments?

Sorry, another question! This time, it’s about HSK. I understand that students can sign up to take the HSK, but do the teachers run any prep classes? Or are the school lessons considered to be sufficient? Do students take outside lessons to prepare? Which levels do they take? Thanks for any info.

My kids are not from RGS so I dont know if its appropriate for me to say something. Both of my kids have already taken HSK n there is no need to take any prep classes. HSK is the Chinese equivalent of NSW.

          😄

What years are your kids in and what levels of HSK did they take?

Grade 5. This is the only grade that they are required to take.

                What is HSK?

For OBS, do we need to bring our dd for medical checkup?

HSK = Hanyu shuiping kaoshi (汉语水平考试)

Medical checkup for OBS is scheduled for sometime in mid-Oct in school. Cost is something like $15.

Hi! 🙂 Area studies is the study of the South East Asian countries in particular. It is like RSP in a sense. If I am not wrong its Geography and History of these countries but I'll go check and make sure.

The official description from the RGS website can be found here - http://www.rgs.edu.sg/Pages/holistic-humanities.aspx

Area Studies is the last tab on the page, so you would have to click the plus sign 🙂

Medical checkup for OBS is during 16 and 17 October (marking days of EYAs) ^^ An announcement and more information has been posted on inet and can be seen by both parents and students.

                        Hello! 🙂

Choco is back in action 😄 Well OBS is so so so fun and exciting right?? Don't worry too much, the more detailed briefings will be held a few days before they go 🙂

Nah, you don't need any sunglasses. No laundry done. No facilities for that. You will actually need more long sleeves than short sleeves. There are quite a lot of things to bring, that's for sure! It's a camp for 5D4N and there are many activities like water activities so more sets of clothes may be required! For those items like solid fuel and maybe knife you can share with someone next year i guess! Because solid fuel is used for cooking dinners so you generally share it as a class 🙂

Essential things are the basics like clothes and toiletries and sunblock/insect repellent, and then things like maybe gloves and other optional things you want to bring to make your life easier maybe you can just try to borrow around? 🙂

OBS may sound very troublesome and all, but it's an awesome opportunity to bond with your new class, and you remember the events for a long long time! We still talk about it now 🙂
