I would think it's unrealistic to expect the 220s to suddenly become 250/260, although it is not impossible. Most likely the 240/250 will be pushing closer towards 260 and there's not reason to think they can't cope coz they will eventually take the same o or A levels.zeemimi:
That's so true. I have relatives' kids with both 250s & 260s. The 250s got a master's scholarship for uni and the 260s repeated his 'A' level to get a place in a not-so-popular course in uni. I have a neighbour from 'N' level pursuing a course in NTU now and his cousin who scored 130 (not 230) for psle has also secured a place in NTU. There are late bloomers around.Yup .... That's how I feel too. Anyway this t score is just 3 digits and not exactly reflective of a kid's ability. It doesn't take into account how a kid may bloom or shrink in Secondary school. I've seen 250s rise to the top of the school and other 250s sink to the bottom. And I've seen 260s sink right to the bottom.

Believe next year to avoid such stress, more n more students n parents will head n try dsa option; surplus of candidates to compete for limited places through dsa. This will be next national challenge in future to secure a place in top schools !!!
I have a relative working in moe and recently she hinted that they may just abolish dsa, esp., for non-academic. Moe has handled several cases of academic's ability mis-match which causes unnecessary stress to pupils. One case saw a girl weighing a mere 30kg in a top-notched school due to stress and others developing psychological problems.
Recently, I've seen an article about dsa may be shifting towards merit on pupils' characters. It will be a good move but it's difficult to prove its genuineness.
But whatever the move, if any, I hope moe can announce & prepare parents for the change earlier instead of dropping a 'bomb' on us like the maths papers, stirring much anxiety and uncertainty in our midst. -
I am intolerant of careless mistakes.
I used to work with a girl who is 20 years younger than me. She makes a lot of careless mistakes in her work. When I pointed out to her nicely, she told me she has always been like this since she was a student :faint:
As a working adult, careless mistakes reduce your credibility as a reliable worker.
We all heard of horror stories of surgeons leaving xxx in the patient's body during surgery. Bad habits should be nicked off when young.
A pupil who is careful in his work should be rewarded. -

My son used to be much more careless than now. I thought he has finally learnt that losing marks to carelessness is not worth it. He's still careless now but that's because he tends to work fast and miss a word or two in the question. -
Have been following some of the threads and speaking to dd about it.
As a child, she wondered with easy math papers, how will their scores be differentiated if everyone scores well as everyone finds the paper easy. This includes peers who have been struggling with math for school exams. Was joking with her that full marks is A*, 90-98 is A?, etc... Now this makes us wonder if the new system of grading is indeed better since there is no bell curve effect? Was MOE trying to show us through this PSLE that new grading system is better and we should all embrace it??? :?
I also agreed with some forumners that with such papers, does it mean that we've been \"over\" preparing our P6s and subjected them to \"unnecessary\" stress? If we know the standard is like that, we probably won't send dd to those onsponge PSLE holiday camp as dd wanted to learn more problem solving techniques to cope with PSLE.
I also wonder how it will affect my P5 next year? Will it continue to be easy or MOE upon hearing this year's feedback decide to make it more challenging and will \"trial and error\" the intensity of difficult questions for next year??? So how should we prepare????
Though dd has CO but after her prelims performance, I had thought of asking her to evaluate her performance after PSLE if she really wants to exercise her CO or wait for the results? She is adamant about exercising. But I realised that with such papers so far, it's actually tough to make the call.
Well... maybe we are speaking too early ??? as we still have chinese and science to go. For all we know... they might be the killer ones

For your boy, since he knows what caused him to miss a word or two, then slow down when reading the qn.
It is a matter of whether the child wants to do sth about it.
Before I get stones throwing at me, I must say this: every child is different, some realise earlier, some later.
My elder boy at sec 4 still makes careless mistake, though very very few now.
As for my ah boy, he is now able to spot his careless mistakes. But he still has the issue of mis-interpreting qns.
Careless mistake is not the same as mis-interpretion of qn. -

It is a matter of whether the child wants to do sth about it.[/quote]I notice that this happens to more boys than girls. Is it due to boys being more active than girls at this age? My dd is much more meticulous than my ds. For ds case, his mistakes are due more to lack of focus, interest or motivation. But if he knows he can gain something out of it, he will bother to spend time to check to minimise errors.
For example, he knew his mock exam results will not be reflected in the report book and therefore he skived and made several careless mistakes. However, he was meticulous in doing his prelim as he knew it could land him with an edusave scholarship. For him, his mistakes can be reduced if there is 'carrot' attached. -

OT: hubby has an engineer who on & off will miscalculate the dimensions, ended up with an unusable pdt (unless subject to modification) at customer's place. No amt of scolding has eliminated his carelessness by 100% :slapshead:
