There are plenty of parents around who think that the only dreams worth chasing are becoming a doctor, lawyer, accountant, banker or senior civil servant.

Add one more to your list - 嫁得好 is on the wishful list too :rotflmao:

:rotflmao: Do you know that one of the main reasons that a lot of Hongkong parents give their daughters piano lessons is to improve their chance to 嫁得好?

Not I say one hor, my Hongkie friends said one.

Hmm, girls who play piano are more feminine? 😉

I think maybe also because girls who play piano are perceived to be better brought up and has better family background.

                    Hello people!

Just to check, 1 hour is the max for beginners right? Usually, for an average beginner at preschool age, how soon do they progress from 45min to 1 hr?

I am a little concerned if it's a little too fast for my little one? He started in august with 30min. It took about 3 lessons to go to 45min and come oct, he would be doing 1hr. The teacher thinks he is ready and would be able to last that long (concentration level).

I don't want to sound like I doubt her professional judgement but I am curious - lesson duration is extended so frequently and so soon?
Hello people! After one week, I finally understand why I feel odd asking the above question. You people probably thought I am odd too. 😆

I have this impression that length of lesson is tagged to the level/grade. And since my son just started lessons, I Have honestly expected the lessons to stay at 30min for as long as 6months? Or until he is as good as a grade 4 (as the school charges the same rate from beginner to grade 4)?

Because of this mentality, I couldn't figure out why the teacher thought the lesson should stretch to 1hr. While I like what is happening in the lessons and she definitely could impart knowledge to my son, the nagging question of why the need to extend the lesson sits in my heart.

After reading dream's latest reply, I  see the light.
                    😂 silly me.

Those are career path/ambition. I would be ultra sad if my son come and tell me that he dreams to be a doctor/lawyer/accountant etc. So no imagination meh? :slapshead:

Dreams are different. To me, dreams are eg to sing On oscar's stage or to have a role in a broadway threatre performance.

While I definitely hope my son can be a doctor/lawyer/banker/ whatever successful professional, I do not want these to become his dream. He should have bigger dreams. For the time being, one of his dreams is to fly to mars and I think that's a worthy dream, never mind can do or cannot do.

                        Dreamaurora:

You will need to find out then if the extra time is put into good use. If the teacher can give a more well-rounded lesson with that extra 15 minutes, then I think it is money well-spent. If the teacher just basically goes through the same amount of stuff, then perhaps he/she is just dragging out the lesson.
thanks dream aurora. This is the reply which I have mentioned about. For some strange reason, after reading this, I somehow realize what is so odd about my question and where the gaps are.

We just did our first 1 hr lesson. I would say it is comfortable for covering more and I can see a change in the way she structures her lesson (from 30min to 45min to 1 hr).

She doesn't drag her time, not much really. Whenever she teaches something new (eg reading notes on stave) and my kid cant really grab the idea or simply needs more practices (eg playing with left hand), she would turn around to make sure I get the drift and set it as homework. It's like she could read my mind,\"ok, ok, I will drill him at home. Now don't waste time, go on...\" 😆

At the moment, it is still manageable - much can be done offline with my supervision (eg play with left hand, play more legato, play with metronome). However, I am well aware of my lack of piano knowledge so I am mindful of teaching beyond what the teacher has taught. better slowly and surely than to teach the wrong thing and have to do corrective work.

You would understand how parents who are not musically trained could only \"help\" this much and once their kids move up to a certain level, they pretty much could only offer encouragement. The other day I was sitting next to my son, with him doing the piano theory homework.

There is part where he needed to look at the notes and write the relevant letters on the space provided. Seeing the speed and ease he identified the notes, I felt a little defeated. Erm... Well, because I needed to \"count\" the lines to figure out which semibreve is C and which is D and etc.

But ha, I am not going to tell my son! I did tell the teacher though.
