Absolutely right. In Y5/6, you need to choose subjects from 6 groups:

Group 1 (1st Lang): Either Lang/Lit or Lit in the 1st Lang (default=English).
Group 2 (2nd Lang): Either MT, or if MT requirements have been met (e.g. by doing it as L1 prior) another lang.
Group 3 (Individuals & Societies): A humanities subject (e.g. Hist, Geog, Econs).
Group 4 (Experimental Sciences): A science subject (e.g. Chem, Phys).
Group 5 (Mathematics): Mathematics of some kind.
Group 6 (Aesthetics/Option): Either an aesthetics subject (e.g. Visual Arts, Drama, Music) or another subject from one of the other groups.

You choose to do three of these at HL (Higher Level, which means 240 hours' worth of curriculum time + overheads) or SL (Standard Level, which means 150 hours' worth of curriculum time + overheads).

There are also some other compulsory activities which are foreshadowed by similar activities in the Y1/2 and Y3/4 IP curriculum.

So I guess most will take 2 sciences plus math at HL and the rest at SL level then ?

Strangely enough, a bare majority take two HL sciences (Chem/Phys or Chem/Bio) and Math. But in these multipolar days, the humanities have great market value. Indeed, there is a significantly large proportion doing English/History or something along those lines.

Hi anyone son in year 3 IB? Heard from my son the Math paper (Paper 1)yesterday (30/09/13) was tough. He looked drain out when he came home yesterday. Did anyone hear anything from your son?

The point of the IP exams is roughly this. Every subject grade goes from 1 to 7. Each grade interval is about 15 percentile points. A grade 7 is roughly 85%+, a grade 6 is about 71%+.


Advice to students:

To get safely promoted, you aim for 36 points, which if you cut it fine is an average of say 72% overall, evenly distributed. That’s not high. However, some people will struggle when they aim to get 85%+ in ALL subjects. That way lies madness (unless you are truly a well-rounded and regularly hard-working type). So learn what you need to do and do it. If you think you are doing PSLE and need 90% for every paper, you are mistaken.

(Note: the aggregate score is 1-7 points for 6 subjects — 2 languages, 1 science, 1 maths, 1 humanities and 1 other subject — total max = 7 x 6 = 42 points. You also need to pass everything, preferably, otherwise some subjects may require you to do some form of remediation if you are truly bad.)

Any sample of the past years ib exam questions that we can take a look? Who would mark and grade the students work? Lastly, students from sota, sji, sports school, etc would be taking the same ib exam?

The IB exams in year 6 are written papers. However, up to about 25% of the grade for different subjects can be on assignments submitted earlier. There is a wealth of official information available on the IB website at http://www.ibo.org. The most useful page for you would probably be http://www.ibo.org/diploma/index.cfm.

In the Singapore context, yes, students from SOTA, SJI (soon), and other November schools will be taking the same exam. May schools such as UWC will take similar exams, but not identical (just as is the case for May vs Nov O- and A-level papers).

ACS(I) students in the IP programme do not sit for \"A\" levels. They will take the IB Diploma exam which most students in International Schools are doing.


That's the big difference.

Please note that only students above the cut off point go for the IB Diploma programe. The rest will sit for 'O' Level. This year I think they only allow those above 260 go for the IP six years programe. The rest are for 4 years 'O' Level programe.

That's not right. Students who enter at Year 1 will be either in the Integrated Programme (IP) or non-IP. Non-IP students will carry on to do their O-levels in Year 4, but they may be allowed to transfer into the IP at the start of Year 3 if they have done very well.

Students who are in the IP will skip the O-levels and continue into the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme in Years 5 and 6. Students who do well in the O-levels and wish to continue in Years 5 and 6 must compete with other O-level graduates for slots under the JAE as for any entry to any pre-university course.
