My experience is based on 2 yrs ago. Not sure if there will be changes this yr.

The school take good care of the kids. Most of the admin / logistics infor will be briefed to the parents during orientation day.

If you are picking up your child just need to confirm with him which gate you are going to wait for him. The tr will indicate on a card with lanyard and put on your child on the first day of school.

There will be packed food during the first 2 wks of school while the kids familiarise with the new environment. After 2 wks, they will have a P4 buddy, if I remembered correctly the level for a wk I think, to help them to buy food. I will give a mix of $1 and 50 cents coins, easy for the kids to manage and get change back.

During orientation day, need to fill up a Giro form so prepare your bank account infor.

Now the school's bookshop is under Popular. I prefer the old bookshop and the nice aunties but what to do must accept the change. There's no need to buy the optional items. The files is a must becos the trs will use the files to file all the worksheets that the kids complete in school. The files will be brought home during holistic assessment period. The bookshop accepts the Popular membership card for discounts too. Not sure how will the books buying process like this yr under Popular.

There was an additional parents' briefing during my time, some wks into P1. By this time, the school will inform who are the kids who need to attend LSP and it's also the time to ask your burning qns to your child's FT and the various HODs.

Label everything that your kids bring to school. The kids sit in groups in the classroom and stationery will be more or less the same brand. So important to label everything or things will be mixed up. I labelled each colour pencils too. The only thing I didn't label was the pencil caps and pencil caps were the things that dd1 lost during her first wk in school LOLOLOL.

Holistic assessment

The holistic assessment seem to be ongoing for the whole yr LOL. The duration is abt every 10 wks. The trs will prepare the kids and there will be practise round before the graded assessment. You will rec the report bk either in term 1 or 2, I cant remember now. The marks will be rounded up to 2 decimal places, nothing to be alarmed.

Hong Wen is a SAP so higher Chi starts in P1. The first term is HYPY and second term or third term will be Chi characters. Kids who are weaker in Chi will be given additional help.

The kids attend Chi and Eng speech and drama to help them with both languages and with Show and Tell, Show and Tell for both languages are graded too.

Spelling in Eng and Chi contribute to the overall grade in the holistic assessments. Do keep a look out for the spelling lists and the spelling dates.

CCA, there's a list of CCAs that P1 kids can opt for, not compulsory. There will be selection trials for niche CCAs.

My dd1 enjoy learning and like her trs in Hong Wen, so everything else will be alright.

I'm sure the new P and his team will bring Hong Wen to greater heights. They will carry on the good works done by Mr Ngoh.

I will miss Mr Ngoh but 世上无不散的筵席 , all the best to him. I considered myself fortunate to have the chance to hear him talk abt education and the importance of parenting.

My DD is also going to HWS next yr. Can anyone advise when do we need to buy the uniform/text books etc? Cos’ my friend already received letter from her DD sch (in AMK) abt the purchase, but so far I did not receive anything besides the letter abt the orientation date. Did I miss out something? -_-‘’'

Last time, the old bookshop will sell uniforms too, not sure abt this round.

P1 is very exciting time for parents too.

During dd1's time, I even organised a test run, to make sure we can reach school on time. We take public transport. Dd1 and I timed her prep time, transport arrival and journey time, including walking time. We did it on a wkday with her waking up as required on a school day condition.

I notice that there are some constructions next to Hong Wen. Are they building condo? Will it cause jam during morning peak? Worry that it will be noisy if the construction work is performed on a week day.

The construction next to the left of Hong Wen, if you are facing Hong Wen's school name, is for Northlight School, I saw the name on the construction noticeboard. The construction to the right of Hong Wen is Singapore Power's transmission cable tunnel project. The project is expected to be completed in 2016.

The jam, if any, is caused by the traffic lights and rainy days. The traffic lights at the junction, think it's Towner and McNair road, I'm not good with road names, are not suitable for heavy traffic.

I don’t think it’s construction per se. Figure they used that plot of land for heavy equipment and drilling underground. have not heard my kids complain about noise level. Find that these days traffic along the roads leading to HWS is much better - unless there be a big bus attempting to turn (then can get stuck for a while).

Got back DS1’s SA2 results over this week. Happy to see that this year for Chinese, they are giving results for compo and oral in bands (in past years it was all silent) - so at least I know how he kinda faired in oral, compo. But Eng compo still all silent…I see some markings on his paper but no clue if he did well or not. Not sure if this is only for P3 and above or if they are doing it for P2s and below as well.


Pardon my grousing, but…knowing how well/badly our kiddos do in compo or oral is not about appealing for one mark more…it’s about knowing how much more our kids have to improve.
