Hi. Could anyone help me? I have a couple of questions about IB.


1. Is Higher Mother Tongue offered in IB? Does it work like in A level i.e. If take HMT at O level, then no need to take MT at A level?

2. Is there any advantages to the points if take third language?

1a. No, HMT is not offered in the IB. However, the equivalent would be doing Lit/Lang is your mother tongue.

1b. If you do HMT at O-level, you must still do a second language for the IB Diploma. However, this must be some other language and not your MT. You can do it at foreign language level ('ab initio' — i.e. a language you've never studied before, at basic level) or at second language level (actually, not as tough as the local second language level).

2. No.

Bonus: I'm not sure, but perhaps you need to know that the IB programme is only carried out in Years 5 and 6 (equivalent of JC 1/2 or Pre-U 1/2). In Years 1-4 you can still do HMT and other subjects at the equivalent of O-level (or if you're in a non-IP school, at O-level).

Does it mean taking HMT at O-level has no benefit whatsoever to add to the points for the IB Diplom or to ease up the workload in Year 5 or 6?

The second language sounds like a third language because MT cannot be used as the second language. Am I right?

My understanding is that if you pass HMT in Yr 4, you won't need to do your HMT language (eg. Chinese Lang in my case) for yr 5-6 unless you do it a higher level. However, you'll have to do some other language to fulfil the language requirement for IB. the link below explains the language reqt for IB:

As for third lang, no points \"advantage\" for IP students, unlike O-level track students who will get bonus points (-2) for admission to JC if they get at least C6.

If you pass HMT in Y4, you cannot do it again in Y5/6 unless you do it at a Literature level (i.e. as a Group 1 subject) since there is no Group 2 level higher than HMT…

My DS psle t score is way below expectation.how shld he prepare for the entrance test for IB at sec 2 level? Any advice is much appreciated.he is a reasonably intelligent and an extrovert child consistently scoring in 90's in maths and sci during his primary.
