The ab initio languages are really very easy in terms of content and requirements. You are learning essentially how to carry out basic conversations and write basic sentences.Autolycus:
A side question: I just learned from my son that assessment for CLB actually completes by yr 5 leaving students time for other subjects in Yr 6. May I know for other 3rd language @ ab initio, is it the same or will it stretch into yr 6? (My son is considering a 3rd lang for Yr5 next yr but unfortunately, he won't be allowed to take \"bahasa malayu\" as he has taken MSP @ \"O\"-levels this yr.) By any chance you know if the school offers \"bahasa indonesia\"? ;)) Thanx much!
Yes, the school offers Bahasa Indonesia.

Autocylus, Kandc, growupmum....
Thank you for your time and encouragement. Much appreciated.
The answers to growupmums queries are indeed very informative and useful.
Yes, the best is yet to come for my son ...the candle shall burn brighter and no headwinds can blowout the small flicker that it is now...
My son is neither from an affiliated school nor has met the COP...so its Adieu for now...
Good Luck! Merry Christmas and God Bless....

That said, everyone is guessing about the actual standard deviation under the assumption that the population is normally distributed. But what if it isn't?
People are also trying to outguess each other in terms of who is going to apply to which schools. I would say that one measure of interest is how many people have actually checked out the specific school sub-forum here. Clearly, more people in the KSP demographic are interested in RI than ACS(I), although obviously the requirements are likely to be higher. This correlates with what we know about people โย internet-savvy parents tend to have higher resource levels and tend to have children with above-average (yes, 200+ is already above average) scores.
That's why I'm guessing that the overconfidence and under confidence will balance out somewhat, but that it might become slightly easier to get into ACS(I) (since it is an IB school and hence has greatest uncertainty wrt the general population). In times of uncertainty, people avoid uncertaintyโฆ

Dear Autolycus, do you have any figure on how many are promoted from express to IP for the year 2013 ?
According to my son it should be around 100, or near 1/3 of the express cohort. -
ngbrdad:
It ought to be about 60, but that depends on what the class allocation already is, and what plans are afoot for the induction of 60-90 MGS girls in the years ahead. Again, all we can do is guess, until it's announced. And if I knew the exact figure, that would be worse โย I wouldn't be able to tell you at all!Dear Autolycus, do you have any figure on how many are promoted from express to IP for the year 2013 ?

Hi Autolycus,
May I know what is the ratio of express vs IP students in ACSI for past few intakes? -
autolycus:
growupmom:
How many seats are available for the interested ACS(I) O-level students to move to ACS(I) IP programme?
Likely around 60 at most (physical capacity). However, I see this as possibly being affected by a) the calibre of the uptake relative to the existing intake, and b) the need to reserve 60+ places for incoming MGS girls at Y5.growupmom:
There seem to be other IP options available for boys around 250-254/255 like Victoria, Temasek, CHS, SJI, etc. So for a child inclined to IP/IB and in this 250+ score, what would be the reason to join ACS(I) O-level and then hope to convert to the IP programme?
Very good point. I would suggest that they apply to another school, actually. ACS Barker, for example, is turning out O-level results way above the estimated likely outcomes.growupmom:
ACS(I), like any other unusually large and diverse institution, suffers from inefficiencies of talent allocation. The O-level track is being upgraded well under the current principal, Mr Hodge. It tended to receive poorer resource allocation under the previous principal. Students from both tracks don't spend a lot of time thinking about their feelings towards each other. But if pressed, some of them will express their insecurities in various ways. Things are, I should note, a lot better than they were in the 2005-2010 period. How good is ACS(I) O-level results in comparison to other schools that offer pure O-level only. In case the child is not able to get into IP and has to continue O-level. At Sec 2 getting into some other IP school is near to impossible. Since ACS(I) has World class results in IB, is that the key focus of the school or is it also getting similar spectacular O-level results. Also how do the students from both the tracks feel towards each other.
growupmom:
Well, the COPs are not preset. They are determined by the parents. This kind of predictive exercise doesn't work well. The COPs are not clustered. A COP is the score of the lowest-scoring SOPEX applicant for a given course in a given school. The school doesn't determine its own COP. If 500 people with PSLE score of 235 are the top applicants for RI (just to use an extreme hypothetical case), then the COP is going to be 235 at best.I feel with this years' COPs being clustered, and in the hope of them being lower than last years' COPs, parents need to evaluating their risks and chances of getting into IP schools.
growupmom:
Two factors may affect this: 1) increasing popularity of the IB programme in Y5/6, which is now harder for non-ACS(I) IP students to enter, and which is only offered by SOTA and SJI among the other local mainstream schools; 2) the PSLE distribution itself is z-curved, so a person who is given a t-score of 250 is just as good as one who got 250 in the past, relative to his cohort โ but a lot of perceptions have shifted, and this has uncertain effect.Autolycus,
Any guess on how the ACS(I) IP COPs will swing this year :skeptical:
I think ACS(I) IP will go up. But I do not have strong evidence for this guess.
Wow!! Thanks for your insightful answers. I called ACS(I) today and was told there were 100 seats offered at Sec 2 to ACS(I) boys to move to IP. Maybe the person forgot about the MGS girls coming in or is there to be an increase in the intake due to this new affiliation :? . Should check again.
I like this aura of suspense you have added in, but it is surely scary when we are trying to make decisions
- thats the not so fun part of S1 posting. Hoping for the COPs of IP not to go up. Thanks for taking the time to answer my questions.
Since you said \"258 is the new 263\", I am going to take the plunge and put ACS(I) as our first choice. Praying the 258 is truly 263 for the schools this year and it trickles down that way - wishful thinking huh - but well dreams do come true :rahrah: . -

Initially, it was supposed to be roughly 1:2 โย that is, if the total intake was 450, we were taking in 150 IP and 300 non-IP. (Actually, I think the school website still says this.)Hi Autolycus,
May I know what is the ratio of express vs IP students in ACSI for past few intakes?
However, the lines were somewhat blurred โย we had GEP/non-GEP and IP/non-IP classes. Technically, most GEP students (IP or non-IP) would have qualified for IP. So the class ratio became something like 2:3 (that is, out of 15 classes, 6 were IP and 9 were non-IP).
Initially the IP classes were smaller; now they are bigger. I would guess it is about 40% IP now.
At Year 3 IP, there are at most 100 places more than at Year 2, roughly (officially, 150 at Y2 and 250 at Y3). However, not all of them are direct transfers from Year 2 to Year 3. Some are transfers from elsewhere. And some of it depends on fitting people into the right combinations. And if the Y1/2 intake was larger than 150โฆ
