Hianz, I went to check out the key boards at Carrefour and Giant. Unfortunately the cheaper key boards are mini keyboards so the size are smaller than a real piano. Carrefour sells mainly casio key boards and the cheapest there is about 49 dollars (mini key board). Giant have toy key boards at about 35 bucks but the keys are quite small too and sounds really bad…

        Dear hihimummy,

I am staying at the east πŸ™‚
I have a student from sempi, the feedback from the parents are that the teacher spend too little time on each student. Hence the parents have to teach them most of the time. The chiild has been there for a year but still cannot read notes.

I agree that the keyboard is not good but it is only for the time being for those parents who are not willing to invest in the beginning πŸ™‚

My student bought one during the sale at $20. Its 49 keys so it is still usable for the time being.

Do post your enquires here or pm me and i will try my best to help πŸ™‚

        Cheers

I finally got a 2nd hand yamaha 61 key keyboard. Quite a bit more than what I initially intend to pay for but then both of us had lots of fun with this…

            super_dad:
How much do you all pay for piano lessons for your child. Mine started out $90 odd...but is slowly escalating to $130 I think...

Doing it at Symphony Music School at Causeway point....but her recent grade 2 exam, topped the music school class....so can't complain.
I'm paying $107 for Yamaha JAC2. Studying for Grade 2. I'm thinking of switching him out for 45-min 1-on-1 sessions, but that would cost like $130 odd. I wouldn't mind if my son is as motivated in piano as your daughter, sigh...

You are most welcome mincy. Very glad that you've got a keyboard but do keep in mind that it is only for the time being ya, as the touch and sound is not the same as a piano πŸ™‚

Chiefkaisu, firstly i would like to thank you for inviting me to this forum πŸ™‚

Didn't have a chance to thank you till now πŸ˜›

Your son is not motivated? Maybe you would like to let me know more about it and i might be able to give you some suggestions πŸ™‚

                Hi pianojazzy,

And I forgot to welcome you to KSP.com!

My son is just going through the motion when it comes to piano lessons... while he practices out of habit and our constant reminders, he does not attempt to explore beyond what he learns in class. So when it comes to improvisation and variations, he will do it only if he has to. As far as I can tell, he has little problems learning the lessons, but without that interest it is impossible to expect him to grow beyond his current go-through-the-motion attitude. I'm now planning to cut his Yamaha class and move him to a 1-on-1 programme, partly because of scheduling. I did think of stopping his lessons totally, but it's a waste since he has been doing it for the past 4 years. So hopefully he will find a spark in future.

Children are like that. If they can practise on their own, they will be genius already. But how many child prodegies are there? As long as they are still willing to practise is good enough. So don't worry πŸ™‚

I also have to nag at my students every lesson lol.

At this age, they still dunno what they wan yet. So do not stop learning especially he has little problems with the lessons. I have many students coming to me saying that they regretted stopping etc.

Improvisations and variations are just for leisure. It will not be tested in exams but it will be good if the child is good at it.

Most important is sight reading and most students from JMC are weak at it as they do not focus on that till in the later stage. So do focus on that if possible.

                      Hi,

Before you buy a piano for your daughter, need to make sure that she is genuinely interested and will continue to be interested. Else, the piano will just be a white elephant at home.

I think if you talk to the sales people, they will be able to tell you the difference between an Indonesian make and Japan make piano. For us, we bought a Japan-made one from Yamaha, that is good enough to use from Grade 1 - 8. There are some models that are a little shorter in height and may not be suitable for Grade 4 and above.

Some parents who want to make sure the children are really keen before investing in a piano, will start with a cheaper option of a keyboard. But the feel is different from the piano. Students of Christophori Music School can "rent" piano practice time very cheaply. So some options before you decide to invest.

It is definately different for indonesian made and Japan made. Firstly the tone is already different. (just like cars - made in japan or made in thailand)

Do talk to your teacher and she will definately recommend something which is good for your child.

I suppose Lizawa bought a U1 from Yamaha. That is fully assembled in Japan. The another model is U1J - assemble in indonesia. The price difference is a whopping 3k but it is definately wiser to get a U1 in terms of resale value (if ever you child is not interested and u want to sell it)

Do not go to too many dealers as u will make your self confused.

Alternatively, i recommend my student to get a swiss piano - assemble in shanghai. The price is the slightly cheaper them U1J (for my students) however, as the parts are from switzerland hence it is better compared to U1J and it can be use till grade 8 πŸ™‚
