Hi Steadyberry, my ds will be in 3E, dunno who will be his teacher yet, how is your ds doing too? He will be in p4 next year right?

Hi ckhoo5
Yes, my ds is in P4 nx yr. Hope his class will get a diff form teacher nx yr. His class didn't do really well overall (minus the top 10 students). Think about 8 fr 3F and 3 from 3G will be promoted to 4E nx yr. A total of 11 will be promoted which means about the same number of students will be demoted. I asked some of my friends and most of them said usually only 2 or 3 will be promoted or demoted. This can only mean 1 thing. The teacher did a bad job. Hope yr ds will get a better ft nx yr. Btw, do u know that hcl has chg from Thursday to Tuesday? -
Hi Steadyberry
Oh, that sounds bad, hope your ds is not affected & hope the Form teacher will not be teaching 3E class next year! Yeah, abt the HCL, it is for selective student only right? My ds says he no need to attend HCL & asked me to purchase normal chinese textbook. Not sure how the teacher select the students for hcl as ds got band 1 for chinese but seems like he no need to take? -
Hi Steadyberry
I do not understand about this promotion and demotion. Can you enlighten me?
Do you mean every year there is promotion and demotion? According to class? mean if my ds is in class G, he do good he promoted to F and bad demote to H?
Thanks -
Hello Lina
The streaming starts P3, based on P2 overall year end result. If I'm not wrong, per my ds, E is the first class, follow by F & G. The promotion/demotion will only happen from P4 onwards based on your overall result end of P3.
Hope it helps to clear your confusion & welcome to Woodgrove!

Yes, hcl is tough & not easy to get in. I remember my friend's ds (same yr as yr ds) was in sen kwang when he was in P1. In P2, he was not in Hcl. She was shock bec she thot her ds is very gd in CL. I asked her for average mark & she told me 29.5/30. His son has 1 or 2 mistakes in every tests. Whereas class average is close to full marks. So they really picked the best to be in hcl. I am sure there are kids who can get full marks in almost all tests. So competition is tough.
Moreover they also monitor your oral performance in class, not solely based on results. Another child I know has been getting full marks in most of his tests but was not selected. The parent told me bec her son always mix CL with eng when she asked the CL teacher why her son was not selected.
Refer to last yr's P2 Hcl classes (2004), most of the kids selected to be in the best hcl class got 93 (overall results Inc oral) & above. The marks for the 2nd best class were between 89-93. This was what I heard. Initially I tot both classes were of the same level.
Maybe the standard of Chinese is higher for 2005 kids which makes it even harder to get in. For nx yr hcl, my ds told me all in hcl remain in hcl but not sure of which class yet. Some might move up to the 1st class and some might move to the 2nd class. -

Yes, streaming is based on p2 yr end result but they will still look at yr maths results followed by yr eng results. Last yr p2, 2 students who got 2nd in their class didn't get into 3E. They were posted to 3F. It happened to my friend's dd too. She got, let say 260 whereas her classmate got 255. In the end, her friend got into 3G whereas she went to one of the classes A-D. -
Hello Steadyberry
ooh, now more clearer on the hcl requirement, think my ds’s chinese not as good as some of his counterpart as he score overall 90 only, and he was in the 2nd best class during P2 time… thanks for explaining! -
ckhoo5:
U r welcome. Which means the standard of Chinese is very high since yr ds didn't get in even though he scored overall 90. If yr ds performs well nx yr, there is still a chance for him to get into hcl class. One girl in normal CL was promoted to hcl class nx yr. From P1-3, she was in normal CL but nx yr she is in hcl (should be in the 2nd class). So u never know.Hello Steadyberry

Hi linakua
Yes, E is the best followed by F and G. The rest are normal. Don't have to feel stress unless you have really high expectations or put too much emphasis on grades. Actually woodgrove is not the only school, some schools started streaming as early as P1. so woodgrove is still ok as streaming starts only after end of P2.
