I did wonder too. The incidence is indeed sad. It was pirate's comment about buying what one can afford, that some goods aren't necessity that this incidence came to mind.

The widening of income gap has made certain food / items a luxury for the low income group. Having that extra amount of money perhaps, to the boys, was a little chance for them to try out something they can't usually afford. After asking the prices of each of the items, they realized they could afford only one muffin.

I don't think we would expect well-dressed boys of the same age who stepped out from their parent's vehicles to do the same thing these 3 boys did. It is something for us mull over, I feel.
I have a different take on the incident, actually. The boys may only have that amount of money on them at that moment, and maybe they just wanted a snack? Sometimes, it's just fun to share. If they were really hungry, I think they would have been smart enough to make their money stretch by going somewhere cheaper than a petrol station shop.

If it is in the late afternoon (for single session) or evening, the school canteen may be closed. The nearest food source may be the petrol kiosk ( I know at least one primary school fits the bill). The petrol kiosk doesn't sell bread loaves, the muffin may be the cheapest apart from a small bar of chocolate or a small pack of chips.

Obviously we are not ready. In the trains we are already packed like sardines. Anymore we will have people sitting on top.

            sunflower:
It’s not whether we can squeeze in 7 million, 10 or even 12 million people in this small island, with proper planning, or course we can. If there’s a will, there’s a way. We can reclaim land, dig up graves and use up every inch of land or even build water city!

We can build more flats, extending up to the sky, expand transport networks, build more amenities, and even carve out areas where only the rich can afford to pay for the much needed spacious living, the likes of the Sentosa Cove.

However, is this type of environment conducive for living? People crowding everywhere, in parks, gardens, recreational facilities, where you can hardly find enough “space” to think, reflect and relax. Even our homes are built so small that people will feel rather catastrophic, especially when more children (this is encouraged, right?) come along. With everything planned and built, we would feel everything is so artificial, with no or very few nature surrounding us.

I anticipate such high density living would surely have some ill-effects on people’s mental and physical health. So yes, I do hope there IS a reasonable limit so that ordinary people like us can live in a more conducive environment. Stressful living environment created by space crunch CAN be avoided if we have a more holistic view when crafting policies, which do not just focus on numbers only. Or do we want an environment where only the elitists have the luxury of space? Frankly, I feel even the dead need some “breathing” space!
i know what you mean 😄

Of course Singapore can accommodate more - provided people do not move around and those who suggest it do no live here  .

Maybe like the barn owl, we can also flock to the Istana to seek refuge. There's a big piece of land there.

Haha. We are definitely not prepared for it but the government is trying to adapt to that standard by improving our amenities and infrastructure!

😆 Ya hor…cannot fly then cannot have means to get past the guards into Istana... :slapshead:

Better don't get caught…if released back into the 'wild' still good, better don't get put into the 'zoo'.

I find his comment kinda irresponsible: He being a foreigner (I understand he's an Indian American) would not need to be stuck with '8 million' people in this little island forever, but we the locals and our children (and later, grandchildren, etc etc) will just have to live with that..
