All About A Levels

At this juncture, let your dd choose subjects that she's interested in and has an aptitude for.
Yes, she indicated her preference but from a parent's pt of view, it might be too stressful and not necesary to do triple Sc as at A level, she has to drop one of the subjects. -

Econs is more 'maths-science' and less 'humanities' than Geog or Hist, so science students usually think it will be easier to understand and study. Most science students also think that Geog/Hist are purely memorising subjects (I disagree, but that's another topic), and prefer not to try them. Another constraint is how each JC timetables classes - not all combinations may be possible.
My thinking is since the student will be doing Geo or Hist in sec 3 & 4, perhaps it is better to continue further (to A levels) rather than to take up Economics from ground zero? -

A question to consider is whether your child knows which sciences she wants to do at A level. My daughter has no idea, or even if she will want to do any sciences at A level. So we have decided to play safe and advised her to take triple science to maximise her options. She has done fairly well so far, so we think she will be OK. If she were weak at sciences, we would advise her differently.jtoh:

Econs is a very useful subject though, especially if your child wants to do any finance, business etc courses. It's also a good course just for general knowledge. But the main thing is to let your child decide based on interest. Studying needs motivation, and it will be easier if she is interested in the subject.slmkhoo:

Economics is a combination of the sciences and the arts, and I agree with the previous post that the skills involved are impt. E.g. when writing a GP essay, we rely more on arguments than theory. When answering a Chemistry or Physics question, we tend to rely more on theory.
Economics marries both skills, as apparent from the way case study questions are structured. That being said, writing 3 essays in 2 hrs and 15 mins is a bit trying, not just on analytical speed, but also on physical endurance...
Cheers
Melvin

Hey guys! 2 weeks till results are out and I’m dying already! ._.
Anyways, I’ve been brooding over which JC to select over the past month and I’ve been down to 3 Jc’s, in which I’ll list my combi and my impression of the school! ^^
1. NYJC
-Math
-Econs
-EL & L
-EL Lit
-Impression: warm school that doesn’t judge haha. Great school character and facilities apparently as reported from my friend.
2. VJC
-Math
-Econs
-China Studies in English
-EL Lit
-Impression: crazy enthu spirit that’s higly contagious. However, is it me, or are Victorians more self-conscious? I’m seeing so many with branded stuff.
3. NJC
-Math
-Econs
-EL & L
-El Lit
-Impression: from what I’ve gathered, it’s a more introverted society there, but offers equal opportunities for leadership.
What are your impressions of these schools? Which school would you recommend? Also, would you recommend EL & L or China Studies? If I’ve offended anyone, I’m truly sorry. -
