      Guppy,

      So I can expect SA1 and SA2.
For P1, their so-called SA1 is like a test and the results will not be included in their year end assessment.

For SA2, the marks will be pro-rated to include alternative assessments, spelling tests and etc. There is no ranking result in their report books but teacher will advise the lowest, median, highest results for each subject per class level as well as cohort (whole of P1) level.

I feel that P1 is still honeymoon period for most kids there. My P2 gal has homework daily, esp English creative/compo writing and Maths. I feel that the sch does not emphasis much on Chinese...hardly see my gal doing Chinese homework, apart from the Chinese workbook and the Chinese newspaper (Hao Peng You).

Actually, we've come across teachers who are really very nice, going beyond their usual call of duties. I am sure your dd will come across them during her years in IJ. The Principal is very motherly so the environment seems to be of a caring one.

Don't worry about the SA1 & SA2. Remember, it's a long journey ahead. You might want to take the PSLE as the 1st major, like you've got 6 years to prepare your dd for that. Let her enjoy all her time in IJ. While the school tries to develop the girls academically, the school also provide opportunities to develop the girls in many areas besides just studies. Take time to discover her other virtues besides trying to do her best in her studies.

She'll have a good time in IJ. The canteen food is quite good & inexpensive  .

Agree that most of the teachers were very friendly, and quite responsive to my email.
The previous principal Mrs Bheem was a very nice and friendly lady. I was told that she has strong rapport with the PVs. I will encourage parents to participate in the PV activities if they can...it can be very enriching experience for the parents, as they get to know more abt their gals' behaviour in school. If not for my family commitment, I would love to contribute more in PV.

Academically, I have gathered feedback from a few parents that the school had high standard for English. But I also find that their Maths worksheets can be quite challenging for my gal, who is not so maths inclined.

                  Hi bebe,

I won’t be so stressed if my gal gets into CHIJ Toa Payoh. If SA1 is not included in the year end assessment, at least there are alternative tests to make up for SA2.

My son had 好朋友 in P1/2 in another school but his teachers did not emphasize much on it. So I kept them for him to practice. Did you get many assessment books for the 3 subjects this year ? I understand there is streaming from P2 onwards in this school.

Thanks for all your input, at least I know what to expect. Now is to register her in the school and cross the first hurdle.

Hi, anyone knows how to arrange CCA bus? What timing they have, how much? Must pre arrange with the school or can get on the bus like that?

                      Hi

Note that alternative tests contribute only abt 5-10% of the Year end assessment..so the main result is still attributed to the SA2 papers. But not to worry abt the results at P1 level..I think it is more important for the gals to adapt to the sch environment during the first year.

It is compulsory to subscribe 好朋友 for P1 and P2. So far, the teachers only get my gals to those questions that are relevant to their level. I think they did not attempt those questions that are meant for higher chinese.
I tried to get my gals to read the articles in the magazines, but they were not too keen. Hiaz.

When my gal was in P1, during term 3 and 4, she was assigned to do Chinese in another class. I believe they re-group the students based on their Chinese ability. I find that this is good as the teachers can conduct her lessons pace based on their students' level.

Yes, there will be streaming at the end of P2. If my memory did not fail me, I recalled that it was mentioned during the orientation, that the streaming will be based on Maths results.

I bought many assessment books esp Maths, but I do not cover them all. Sometimes I used them as reference book to come up with ways to explain the concept for my gal (who is pretty weak in Maths)
Eg Maths - I have Fabian Ng (for the basic), Andrew Er (for the more challenging) and Simon Eio (for model drawing) and Yee Fook Siong (For heuristic questions).
English - I have bought a book each to cover Vocab, grammar and compre. I have also gotten a few compo/creative writing model books for my gals to read.
Chinese - Only 1 assessment book - and she hardly does it..

At P2, she has homework daily. And with her extra work from her maths enrichment class, she has hardly any time to do those assessment books I got for her. So most of the time, I will just get her to do those topics which is weak in.
She has Maths topical review once in 2 weeks..so it is a good gauge for me to identify her weak area.

When she was in P1, her teacher did not use any textbook as they were on STELLAR program. For P2 this year, the teacher asked her to get a grammar reference book. The grammar book is kept in school so I do not know how frequently my gal is using it.

The timing of the CCA buses are at 3.15pm & at 5.15pm. No need to pre arrange. Ask your dd to go up to the bus & show the bus uncle your address (you may write the address & ask your dd to show). CCA bus is $1/- each trip.
