wonder mom:
Today My daughter got offer from NUSh. Now I am in a great dilemma (RGS Vs NUSH) because the travel time to NUSH is 1 hr 30 min. I have one more doubt. If she finds it difficult to continue after 2 or 3 years, is it possible for her to switch to any other Ip school?
Hi wonder mom,
I understand the dilemma that you are in. I live in Tampines. It takes me roughly 80 minutes to go to school. In fact, I have quite a few friends living in the Tampines and Pasir Ris region.
Firstly, regarding the NUSH curriculum. Your daughter would be able to transfer to other schools. One of my school mates transferred out of NUSH to RI in year 2, and transfer back from RI to NUSH in year 4. So this route is definitely open, however there are several points to note:
Your daughter would be learning from a syllabus vastly different from that of mainstream. She might learn how to solve maths and science problems in a different way. She will be ahead in content for most part of mathematics and science.
On the other hand, content and proficiency in other subjects (such as English or humanities) may be lacking. This is not necessarily due to NUSH teaching less of such subjects, but could be due to more focus given to mathematics and science.
These may be issues to consider when transferring in and out of NUSH. NUSH itself generally do not recommend students to transfer to other schools due to curriculum differences and instead provide support to students as and when needed. In addition, as grading is 40% based on exam, with the other 60% going to assignments, tests, quizzes, etc. Consistency alone can go far way in earning grades in NUSH. -
RGS higher perceived value.

Both are good schools but different in terms of teaching style, culture, etc. Most important what suits your dd. Last year, my dd scored 27x and she chose NUSH over RGS after much consideration and she is very happy there. From what we observed, their learning experience is very much modeled after the university and this we believe will be a great advantage when transitioning to uni after 6 years. Of course, RGS has a much longer history and brand name. So, eventually, ‘gain/loss’ or so called ‘value’ is going to be subjective.

Thanks for the info -
Why in such a rush for uni style learning? Why not let 12 to 16 year olds experience some traditional elite style learning.

There is no hurry at all. I am also not narrow mindedly saying which is better, just sharing what my personal views and my dd’s experience.
If I remember the trail correctly, piggybank has also applied to NUS High but was not offered even an interview. So, maybe it is a good thing to piggybank otherwise the ds will be deprived of ACSI’s elite style learning. -
Any comments made in this forum should not be directed personally pls.

My DD will in Y4 next year. She had no qualm too in choosing NUSH over RGS (\"brand\" name and prestige). She is still in contact with many of her GEP classmates in RGS. She is much happier as she know she is way ahead in terms of Maths and science and have far more opportunities and resources at NUSH to excel as compared to time spent in RGS. Also she won't be bother by this thingy called the \"A\"-level exam and focuses on what area of research she intend to do.
