Hi all,
I am not a mummy but a sec 1 student currently in SCGS. Though SCGS is a one of the top schools in singapore, it has not really given me the \"space\" to develop my passion, art. So I'm thinking of transferring through visual arts to SOTA next year.
However, I have certain things I'm still quite unsure about.
1. Given that I am actually in the lowest class in SCGS, is it okay to go to SOTA? My PSLE score was only 226 and I have friends with scores of 250 and above who are already in SOTA. So what's the average scores of students there?
2. So far, I am not doing very well for my CA's and i doubt my SA's will be any better. For CA3, i scored B4s and B3s for History, Geography, Science and Chinese. The only As i got are for English-A1 and Math-A2. So is this mark range acceptable? Also, Chinese is my worst subject and the only reason i managed to clinch a B4 is because I was cast as the lead in a theatre segment for Chinese that accounted for 30% of CA3. So if not for that I would have failed chinese. (CA2 chinese D7) So I would like to know if its okay to not do so well for chinese...(heheh)
3. If I were to join through visual arts, are there other opportunities for me to experience other art forms? I actually enjoy singing alot and my current CCA is choir. So will there be chances for me to do dance and theatre and all the other art forms?
4. Lastly, I like my art but I'm not sure if it's actually up to standard. I have a strong passion for it. Yet I'm not even sure if I can get in. so here's a link to some of my art stuff...

Anyways, I hope some mummies and current students of SOTA can answer my queries. Thank You in advance
Thank You!! I went to check out what the AEP program is however, SOTA doesnt state HOW to get into it. I called SOTA up actually and they said that wasnt an option. So now I have to wait till Jan 2nd to see if there are any spaces in SOTA before i go for the audition. HOPING THERES SPACE!!! :xedfingers:
Can anyone else give me their opinions? If theres any thing I can work on for my art and improve on, do tell me!
Hi. I am a SOTA mummy. My dd is in visual art year 1 this year. IMO, your art is as good as the students in SOTA, if they are all your work. There is a Talent Academy in March every year during the school holidays and you will start in April if admitted. SOTA has a slightly different curriculum. IMO, those who are strong in English will write. Maths sums and the exam is comparatively easy, but one of the homework was to write and apply how certain Maths concept are applied in every life. E.g. Percentage. There is also a paper ARC where you are required to debate on current affairs issues. The exam topics were something like \"what are the challenges that parents face today\", \"do you think exams are necessary- why or why not\". For visual art students, you also need to study theory of Art. So you need to write. And for next year, they have two literature text books for year 2 - chrysalids and island stories. For IB, you need to have a second language and that has to be Chinese. I was told by another school's IB teacher that SG is the only country in the world that IB org allows students who taken Chinese for more than 5 years to take Chinese as second language. As the papers are marked internationally, sometimes in Canada for Chinese, your competition are really those from non-speaking countries like Canada and Europe. Students from Taiwan, HK and China have to take Chinese as first language. I bought the paper online and think is not that difficult. The comprehension is a bit more difficult than PSLE. The IB teacher told SG students usually do very well, even those that score C6 for O level.
On SOTA website, it stated that transfer students may not go in at the same level. The student may drop a grade if the artistic or academic is behind.
Good luck for your audition. For VA, you have to draw on the spot. My dd also need to critique others drawings. Make sure your sketching is good. SOTA is a good school and has a good program. But join only if your really love art. Hours are long and I heard life is tough from year 4 onwards. -

Thank You!!! I really enjoy literature and the whole English language in general so that's really good news! Also, I'm more into projects so writing about how math helps us is really quite interesting. I can see how SOTA has a more Hands on approach as to just the usual \"do exam paper\" type method.
SOOOO... I have decided to try out for both VA and Theatre as my passion for them are equal. Thank you so much for the info

So, is it that if we have registered, we don't need to report to SOTA on 23rd? -

OMG SO MANY FELLOW R4-ers! (although by many I mean 2)
I'm Zachary. Hope we meet in class! You can tap me on the back and say you're a KSP-er :rahrah:
Yup, you don't have to go on the 23rd if you have registered. However, I applied for third language and I called MOELC up. They told me that I would receive a letter on Reporting Day. So, even though I already registered, I still have to go back. Major sighs!
Oh, classes are already streamed. I heard our class is the best class - all the students above 250. Can you share your aggregate T-scores so we could check? I already posted but FYI I got 251.
Don't worry about people being atas - I heard that it's still a school and there's bound to be bullying. But, just be yourself, mix with everyone and be REAL. That's what's important
Hope to see each other on the 2nd!
EDIT - Kiasu newbie, I'm also in theatre! YAY!

My DS is in R1, his T-scores is 255. So, as "every school is a good school", every class is a good class?
