Hi beanbear. Thanks for suggestion about doing physical tasks and reward system to get him to focus.
He gets to go down and play with his friends every evening. When he does not complete a task properly, I reduce the amount of time he gets to play. Child psychologist says the play time for the day should not be removed totally as a punishment as it would make him rebel more.
We also praise him for completion of tasks and remind him about how far he has come in controlling his emotions and behavior. But sometime, he just loses control and I have to talk to him about him forgetting what the child psychologies taught him. It’s tough at those times cos he is in no mood to talk. Just want to strike out.
So far, we are also trying reward system to get him to wake up on his own. At the end of 2 weeks, he’ll get to choose a toy within an agreed budget. Have to try reward syst for reading cos he hates it. At the most, he will just read one chapter and that takes only about 10 minutes. Anything more and he’ll moan and whine and then could end on shouting match. Or he will just say he’s sleepy… -

Try to find some other thing to remove? Anything that helps your child cope with his condition should not be removed if possible - look at it as a sort of therapy. Also, can you give him more 'play' time during the day? Like beanear's suggestions for indoor ball bouncing or whatever. He probably needs to shake the fidgets out of himself more frequently than just at the end of the day....He gets to go down and play with his friends every evening. Try the rewards for reading. Does he like to listen to books being read aloud? You could offer to read aloud a bit once he has read a certain amount for himself. Try getting books that really interest him to read aloud. Often, kids find reading boring because their comprehension is higher than their reading ability. I used to pick books a bit more difficult than my kids could read so they could get an idea that reading was interesting, and it was worth getting more proficient. -

My DS was diagnosed with ADHD 2 years back and had sessions with child psychologist on how to manage his emotions. Although he is somewhat controlled most times, it is a daily struggle to get him to stick to a routine. And when he is punished for not keeping to it, he shouts and lashes out. I will hold him down tightly to stop him from kicking me or worse, hitting himself. At the end of it, both of us are all tired out. Feel like such a major failure after such break outs. But he will forget all about it after a few hours until the next episode. Does it get better as they grow up?
Hello bb_mom
We are in the same boat.
I am going through the same episode with you.
Now waiting for the EP.
The strange thing is these episode will not happen in front of daddy -
Just to add, for reward system for young kids, you may want to reconsider the two weeks wait. Some kids need instant gratification to feel the difference in adjusting their behaviour as they may give up and revert to old ways before the two weeks wait are up to redeem their rewards. What I usually do is to implement immediate or achievable reward for scheme. After kids see the benefits, I extend the redemption period eg to redeem two weeks later, but up the reward quantum. They can then choose to redeem a smaller reward now or a bigger one later.
Just sharing. -
i have taken up the school and boy counsellor to put him in NCC for cca lol basically we hope he will get more discipline and he will be able to dispere more of his energy into cca.

DS is in P5 so also attempting to get him to read independently. Rewards take a bit longer to be given so that he does not expect instant rewards. So difficult.
We got him to join scouts hoping he’ll learn some discipline and control. But he finds it boring unless they play games. -
Hi,
I will like to seek opinions or help…thanks.
My boy is in N2 this year and his tr has feedback to us that he moves a lot during classes, not able to sit still for long and concentration span is very short. This is not the first time we got such feedback. He attended chinese enrichment class and the tr there also feedback on this. I’m worrying if he has ADHD as he does have some signs on this. E.g. insists his way when I tried to reason him, can’t concentrate and not listening when tried to go through some activities.
I’m trying to find out if there is any support group which i can seek advise on. Tried talking with mummy colleagues and friends and mostly, i will get brushed off by comments that he is still young, it’s normal. But I myself feel it’s not the normal development.
Am I too paranoid to feel my boy has ADHD since he’s N2? Thx! -
Hi sid7737, its never too late or too early to suspect if he's ADHD. I sent my son for assessment when he was in N1 and I am glad we took my cousin's advise and sent him for assessment. When he was in N2, his speech therapist and a physchologist did a test on him and said he is ASD.
