Travel: Australia - Adelaide

Anyone travelled to Adelaide before ? I'm thinking of going there during the Dec Holidays. Have been to perth, so looking for other parts of Australia, so appreciate some feedback

I lived in Adelaide for 3 years during my University days. It’s a very quiet city but a beautiful one. The city gives me a feeling like I’m in UK, with statue of Queen Victoria, monuments & the old buildings. You can probably cover the city in a day or 2 in slow pace. Glenelg is the famous beach area & more lively at night. When I went back with my family & kids twice, I chose to stay there rather than the city as the city can be quite "dead" at night.

For day trips to the outskirts, you can visit Handorf, a German town, where you can get some nice German food. I usually go there for a nice stroll down the street followed by lunch. After that, drive slightly down the street to Beerenberg Farm. They produce all sorts of jam (selling in NTUC) but our favourite part is plucking strawberries in the farm itself.

Moving out of the city, you can probably visit Kangaroo island for more nature & you might meet some fairy penguins & see sea lions up-close. If you are in for drinks, head for Barossa Valley, which is beautiful.

Thanks for the reply ! At last there is a reply, as I was starting to think that nobody goes to Adelaide.

I've not started any planning as I was still deliberating between Perth and Adelaide. As we've been to Perth, I thought Adelaide would be a nice change.
Any recommendations on whether Perth or Adelaide would be suitable for a 3 year old preschooler ?

I guess if you are prepared to take things slow at a 3yo pace, both places are pretty ok. In Perth, we did farm stay at Margaret River, which my kids love.

However in Adelaide, we visited the wild life park & strawberry farm (which I can't find in Perth) and the kids enjoyed as much. There's also a tram ride between the city & the beach which can be an experience. Lifestyle in Adelaide is VERY slow and city do get quite \"dead\" at night but the monuments, fountains, statues make you feel you're in Europe. Do be warned that it can get real hot in Dec months due to heat waves but if that happens, hide in the malls!

Adelaide is just a cycle away from native bushland hiking in the Mt Lofty Ranges. The city makes an excellent base for trips into the nearby wine regions, surf lessons on the Fleurieu Peninsula and hikes through the wildlife lair of Kangaroo Island.

June is winter time in Australia so yes, it will be cold & wet. Temperature should be about 10 degrees or below in the day & pre-dawn hours may drop to around 3 degrees. It will be raining quite a bit but should be light drizzles that come & go

oic. any advice on what to bring for kids (4yrs & 7yrs) to travel there other than jackets?

we went to Adelaide when my son was in 8 and daughter 5. We were there in June, and most days were sunny, although there was one rainy day.


It’s fine in the day time - we got around with trackpants and fleece jackets for the children. Bring a waterproof jacket in case it rains.

The most memorable part of our stay was at Narnu Farm, a farmstay about an hour’s drive from the city. The good thing about adelaide is that all the attractions are quite easily accessed by car within 1 hour’s drive. It’s a relatively quiet city, so no crowds and great for walking around.
