If that's true, it sounds really good. Which JC is your ds in? Maybe the experienced JC mums can advise.

DS is in TJC.
He added that there's no need to practice with assessment bks too. School work will suffice.
I'm skeptical about this.

I’m a little skeptical about this too. Did the school teachers say this? I suppose they must have some success with it to tell this to their students.

Sound right. Similar practice in the poly and uni too.

I recall my JC days (30+ yrs ago) when we had Maths lecturers who gave incredibly long practice sheets - sometimes 50-70 questions! Only about 5 were for handing in, but the hardworking students who worked through the whole worksheet would have ample practice. I did humanities for my other subjects, and if we read as much as the teachers demanded, there wasn't time for much else.

I can understand the bit about not needing tuition, but relying completely on just school notes and school work, and not needing to practise assessment books or additional reading sounds too good to be true. Of course, if it were true, that would be good.

i would imagine (and hope) that in top tier JCs which churn out excellent A-level results, school work and notes alone would suffice, esp since the JC students nowadays seem to be working so hard.


between school work, CCA and projects, is there time to do additional reading/tuition hw without sacrificing personal time and/or sleep?

I think as long as the child understands the concept and can handle work assigned by JC teachers, it is not necessary to do more practices. Extra drilling takes up time, it is better to use extra time for CCA and other activities for a more holistic education.


Of course, it depends on each child’s ability and learning style. Some kids may require more revision/practice (or even additional teaching from tuition) to master the same concept. But by JC level, the child himself would know what is needed.
