Hi, my dd English score has dropped a lot despite personal tuition.

She lost a quite a lot of marks in cloze passagae, open comprehension and synthesis and transformation. It’s hardly a few months to catch-up.
        Any suggestions?

What’s the range of first mark in your dd/ds school for English, Maths and Science in P6 CA1?

For Synthesis and Transformation, I can swear by The Alternative Story's Synthesis and Transformation practice book. You can ask your DD to do all the exercises and then do again those your DD made mistake AT LEAST twice. DS did the whole book 3 times (1 time the whole book and twice on those he made mistakes) within 2 weeks during school days so I believe your DD should have time.

The book has all the difficult/tricky questions. In my opinion, it is better than other books 'cos other books may contain easy questions that are too repetitive (boring).

For cloze passage, we tried many ways last year but DS only improved after he reads The Straits Times daily. He read 1 article from Home section everyday during his breakfast. He chose the articles himself.

                Just my 2-cents.

You should compare against class average to gauge the difficulty of the paper.
                    Some schools set killer papers.

Is it more effective to re read guide or to read new assessment books model answers? Thanks.

Is it more effective to re read guide or to read new assessment books model answers? Thanks.[/quote]Reading Science Guide will improve the understanding of the concept but will not improve answering technique. I think assessment books will improve answering technique but not necessarily improve understanding of the concept. This was what we did last year:

DS read Science Guide book once during December school holiday and once during June school holiday. He read Science Heuristics books but he was still weak in answering method. So DH studied RGPS past year papers to understand how RGPS teachers wrote their model answers (please note for the last few years, RGPS answers were provided by Jeremy so they are not well written. You must get the RGPS papers from earlier years which answers were provided by RGPS teachers themselves). Then we identified DS weak topics and DH wrote his own model answers for those topics found in past year papers.

Maybe there are assessment books that can replace DH's effort but at that time we found it was the best method for DS.
