All About A Levels

Oh is it? Could it be the school's directive rather than the MOE's directive then?
Probably. As far as I know, MOE does not require that the contrasting subject be taken at H2. -
Good to get the info from the horse’s mouth, and make an informed choice during JC selection. Update us when you get a reply, starlight?

Hi jtoh,
Personally I dont know if the requirement of contrasting subject is good or bad.
There was no such requirement during my time (ok, donkey years ago)
Of course studying more subjects to enhance knowledge is good but now we are talking about taking A level exam which means the selection of subjects is likely to affect the further route to U.
Thanks. -

MOE's website gives examples of possible combinations, and some of them have H1 contrasting subjects.jtoh:

This is what I am trying to find out too.
Anyway, I have sent an email to the relevant authorities for further clarifications.
I just want to hear from parents here with such experience.
Thanks, jtoh.

I am hoping to find one (parent with kid) who takes 3 Science subjects and a 3rd lang as a contrasting subject at A level. -
starlight1968sg:
3rd lang can only be taken at H2 level apparently.

It seems so.

A contrasting subject can be taken at H1 level.
But using 3rd lang as a contrasting subject seems a different story. -
starlight, why not let your child try 4H2s, including third lang? Although I think 3rd lang at A levels is tough.

dd is in year 3 now.
She is taking triple Sc, Geo and French.
At year 5, she will have to drop a Sc. I do hope she can continue with her French as a contrasting subject preferably at H2 level. If she can't cope, she may have to take it at H1 level. If French can't be considered as a contrasting subject, then she has to consider Geo or take up Economics. -

Although it's definitely better to hear it from the horse's mouth.
