Wah, that is good!!!!

Like what I always tell pp who ask if berries is good, it is good, just that my son learned slowly. But at least he is learning something there. Could have been worse.

Regarding taking turns, we do it with OT. Started off OT and ST as a combined social group, after that we moved to social skills with OT and speech, compo with ST. We ever did social skills with ST before too, so I guess it's not very clear cut. Now, his OT will try to arrange the session with another kid his age and they will play games together, introducing themselves, saying hello, practising turn taking and cooperation skills. He's getting very good at it already after so many sessions with different boys. Now when he goes to playgrounds, he will introduce himself and ask for the other boy's name. Then they will play together and at the end of it, he will go and way bye. If his sis is around, he will also introduce his sister to them. seriously, you will have no idea this is the same boy who didn't talk to any kids and don't recognize his classmates just a few years back.

I love KKH rehab. Hehehe. With their big number of kids coming in, that's why I think they can arrange such pairing sessions together.

Now the therapists are so satified with his progress, they are thinking how else they can help. He used to hand in a 2 sentence composition to the teacher for his test! Now he can write 3 pages long. Dunno if it's his form teacher's credit or the ST. But oh well. Guess they did manage to teach him some techniques. I just pushed the comprehension headache over to them coz he kept failing them. Hopefully will see some results by end of this year.

Previously you mention you are seeing KKH OT and SLT on monthly basis?

I am really impressed ... 3 pages long. I really hope mine will progress as well as yours.

I think everything plays a part.

I'd Google for it, but couldn't find any as well.
I saw it through a private fb group, so simply sharing it over here.

They should have more publicity if they want to create that awareness, esp. to the public and people ignorant about this.

Good morning mommies and 1 daddy,


In the recent postings, Nugget and Mashy mentioned that both their sons are aware of their ‘label’ and their individual response toward it. I have met PDs and therapists whom advice to me is that should the child be responding well to therapies and don’t need special concession from primary school such as MT exemption, allied support etc, then there is no need for a formal diagnosis. But I have ever met this 1 developmental PD and he told me he had seen cases of teenagers who don’t know how to cope socially in secondary school and coupled with hormonal changes in the teens, they had mental meltdown and depression.

The parents bought the teen to him and he dug through the history and realized actually the teen had autism but because the parents went through intense therapies (and his could be a HF case) and never got a formal diagnosis so they thought he was ‘cured’ and never did tell the child. But teenage hood is a different ball-game all together and the child not knowing of his own condition, could not cope with his difficulty in the social aspect and got very frustrated leading to the meltdown.

So this is actually food for thought for me.

I feel the diagnosis is only really useful when you need concessions in school or access to publicly-funded services. In the case of a kid who is coping well in most things, then the parent can work on the deficit areas at home and help the child understand himself. There is really no need for a label. My now 17yo daughter was only formally diagnosed at 14yo. We had realised that she had social skills and some other deficits from the time she was about 6yo, but we chose to handle it ourselves. We explained to her that she was weaker in some areas and we had to work on those a bit more than her sister did, but didn’t give her a label. Even NT kids need to understand that they are not as good in some skills - sports, music, maths etc, so there’s no difference in helping an ASD kid understand himself.

I totally agreed with Slmkhoo, getting label or not, the parents must know where and when the child developmental needs are. When they are older, I believe we need to explain to them why they think and behave differently from others. How to control themselves. How to regulate their moods. How to blend into the society, why some actions or words are not acceptable in certain events/scenarios. These are the challenging social skills a child needs to learn along the way and try to blend in.


I think my son is aware that he is different because he is in the mainstream environment and its very fast pace and he is "forced" to be independent and his awareness of himself, other people, environment is more acute. I think he desires to be normal like the rest of his friends. That’s why he say he don’t want to be special, want to be normal.

But I told him is okay to be special. Special is not bad thing. I say those super heros all have special powers and his special power is he can read very well. That’s why he was chosen to lead the class in reading. I have to keep his self esteem up. If he think lowly of himself… everything will go down the hill.
