I was just sent this link to an interview with a mother who has an autistic child (also in the interview) and was told that he would never speak. She went against professionals' advice by focusing on his interests rather than on what he could not do, and he is now studying high level physics at 15yo. I also like something else she said - that you are only as good as your teacher, and by letting her kids explore what interests them, they can teach themselves to the limits of their own ability, which could be higher than the teachers. Here's the link:

I read her book. It's a truly inspiring book. 🙂

            Mummies

Pathlight has opened registration for their open house. I have signed up for the October session. Email them if you are keen to check out Pathlight

On meeting the love of their lives in future, seriously, I don’t dare to think of that. I will just take each day as it comes. My son is now more sociable, wants to play with others but he doesn’t know how to do it appropriately and he ended up irritating other kids and his cousin. I felt a sharp pain in my heart when I heard other kids tell him to go away. It’s like, finally he now takes interest in others but yet, he is not given the chance to grow as other kids have no patience to entertain him. I have to keep reminding him that if he asks someone else to play with him, and if the person says no, he has to walk away and not keep asking the same question or pulling their hands. The only person that accepts his way of playing is my gal, his younger sister. She is his best playmate.

Anyway, he turns 5 today. Getting closer to the 7 year old mark and by next year, I have to decide whether to send him to pathlight or mainstream. I really dread it. Sometimes, I wish time stand stills.

happy Birthday to your boy! Don't wish for time to stand still. That will only mean that he won't progress from beyond what he is now. He is just 5. It will get better. I'm sure many mothers here with older kids can attest to that. They have made friends and learned to adjust as they grow older. Why worry about the future that is so far ahead? Even the future of an NT kid is unknown. Isn't it great that he has a great playmate in his sister? How many of us has tons of friends and calls everyone in their Facebook friend list their BFF? Not that many. Just a good friend or sibling is good enough.

happie birthday to your little guy. My boy just turned 5 too. I have decided pathlight will be the school for him. To have a better chance for him to get in, I withdrew him out from iccp n got him into arc. Tmr is his first day. I like the environment there. I hope it is the right decision.

                  hope u r feeling better now.take care

                    Hi Double E,

Yes, our kids’ birthday tends to trigger such an emo reaction in us. The few weeks before my son turned two, I was emotionally unstable - scared that time is running out, worried about his future, thinking why his progress is not faster etc.

My daughter is my son’s best playmate too! My innocent beautiful daughter told me she will marry didi the prince when he is abit older so that she can take care of him for us.

                      Hi mommies and 1 daddy,

I like to ask a question. Does our darlings’ baseline behavior changes within 6 months of time? The reason why I asked is because in the playgroup that he attends for the past 9 months, the general feedback is that he is a quiet boy but he can focus during circle time and is willing to attempt group activities albeit with some prompting by the teachers.

Recently about 2-3 weeks ago, I started having feedback from teachers that my son is getting naughty (focus not as good as before, and sometimes don’t want to finish the task given) and sometimes very ‘high’ as in his mood is very buoyant and he cannot wait for one part of the lesson to finish to dash off to do other things. It is not an everyday thing of course but maybe once-twice a week. He was also observed to have hit/poke his classmates for no reason a few times already!

I am really scratching my head on this new behavior! Does the baseline of our special needs child fluctuate from time to time I.e from the quiet/non-violent to hyperactive/violent? I checked with some mommies whom I met during therapies and they said their child’s behavior is quite ‘consistent’ as in if hyperactive during class then still will be as such but gets better with therapies as the years go by. If quiet, then generally quiet but more awareness and participation in class as the years go by.

I am like haiz… People go therapies to get their child to behave better but my son is like getting worse? Now is the time to change school so I am a nervous wreck!

Erm, actually I don't think it is restricted to asd kids. My NT girl can fluctuate from being talkative to a quiet mouse whether in school or at home. Her teachers said that she can change from time to time and have mood swings.

Sometimes, it could be diet. Like they just had a sugar rush. Or it could be some other external activities that affected them. You may wanna check on his diet. I've known of teachers giving sweets and cookies sparingly. Of sometimes, after a birthday party with cakes, sweet drinks and sweets, they can get pretty high.
