Ang Pow Issues...

Yah. These people are celebrating for the wrong reasons. Ang Bao was never about money. The original custom actually has things like beans and guazi signifying certain things for the receiver. I remember receiving some such ang baos from the elderly and we cousins will gather to try and figure out what each item signify.Funz:
DS best, when pple give him Ang Bao, he tell them no need no need, I receive a lot oredi.
LOL.
I do get criticism, \"how will your kids enjoy CNY?\" or \"They will surely protest when they grow up.\"
It's really sad, that means when they get married and can't receive angbao, means they will hate CNY? Some people really need to re-think the reasons they celebrate the season.
I was actually quite mean this year. My mum nagged and nagged me about giving angbao to a particular nephew when we went visiting at my uncle's. But from the moment I stepped in to the time I started distributing ang bao until I sat down for lunch and started my mahjong until the time that this nephew and my cousin was leaving, this kid was glued to his ipod touch. He did not greet me nor any of his elders and when people went to give him ang bao he actually 'Tsk' them. I went to him and called him, he ignored and continued playing his game so I did not give him his ang bao. -

This is the main reason that has stopped us from getting a portable gaming device for our DS. -
Actually, we were just counting. Eg. if the child receive eg. $400 a year for angpow. In 17 years time (assuming you start from 7 yrs old), there is a good $6800 in his/ her bank account. This is excluding whatever ongoing saving the child may have.
This could always be used for tertiary education, rainy days, etc…
Hubby was asking the kids if he could "invest" their savings for them by buying shares. My dd1 was like… I rather earn interest from the bank. -

This is a good idea but make sure don't get burnt. Buy blue chip should be ok. Like banks or GLC even better. -

interesting....I never knew that!

KSP:
Actually, if you choose those solid blue chips and hold long term since they are still young and there are opportunities out there given the current situation, I believe they should make make in 17 yrs time :lol:MMM:

I still believe in cold hard cash. Keep in a savings account and they get to withdraw at 18… For studies or anything appropriate.

Agree with 2ppaamm. Nothing beats cash. For stocks, market dictates the value of your investments. In urgent needs, are we prepared to liquidate these stocks regardless of your initial cost of investment.

Not that long … My son is already 16 this year time really flies when you watch the kids grow up.
