Yes. Agreed, could be due to the answering techniques. It take time to learn these techniques, if relevant resources easily available, it helps her to understand the techniques in shorter time and less painful.

Would like to get some advice…
My girl is taking her PSLE this year. She’s thinking of applying for RGS (DSA) through Science Domain. What should she be getting for P5 and 6 to be considered "exceptional talent" in the chosen domain?
Can anyone share with me the whole process for DSA(Science) in RGS? Thank you! -

Does the school library has past year papers together with it's model answer?
Past year papers can be photocopied at the library. Loan time is 2 hours, so your daughter would have to use the school's photocopiers (by purchasing a photocopying card at the library or the GO). There are no model answers provided however.
Personally I would attempt all the questions and make an appointment with my teacher during CES or after school to clarify answering techniques or for help with some concepts I have difficulties understanding. ^^
Do take note that due to some changes in learning outcomes/syllabus over the years, topics tested for a particular PPA may not be tested this time round/tested later in the year so don't worry if a question testing something your daughter has not learnt appears in the past year papers. ^^

I entered through GEP but based on some feedback from my friends who entered -
Apart from the traditional scores in school examinations to show your daughter's aptitude, participation and achievement in science related competitions would be good as well. This is because different schools' papers are of different difficulties so its a better way to gauge your daughter's aptitude and a great way to show your daughter's interest in the subject. ^^
There could be a science paper your daughter would have to sit for, (The Math DSA applicants had to sit for a Math one) and afterwards would be an interview for selected applicants.
Though the paper would test for aptitude, but the interview would be for more of interest and passion so your daughter can keep up to date on the latest research discoveries of a discipline she is interested in and read up on it more. ^^

She always said school works are manageable, neither easy nor tough, I brought her to book store, she said none of the assessment books related to her school work. How to help? I am very worry now...
It is actually quite normal to be below median for Y1 or around median for certain subjects as you daughter gets used to the way of testing or finding out her strong subjects and subjects your daughter is weaker at.
School work is a balance of content and skills based but for papers, they normally would test a bit more of the skills so I think your daughter needs a bit more practice, which would be understandable considering your daughter has only been learning them for about 5 months. Some primary schools do teach the skills and hence, some of her peers would be more familiarized with the paper, etc. but this would even out over time and she can always make an appointment with her teacher to have more specific 1:1 feedback on how she can improve. ^^
Because we do not take O-levels, assessment books at the sec 1 level may not be related to what we learn in school because we tend to group topics (esp science) together. So what your daughter learns in year 1 could possibly be spread over a few years for the O-level track as the arrangement of concepts could be different. ^^
Personally I get Ten Year series by Topic and if I learn about Acids and Bases (for example), I can do the Acids and Bases topic in the Chemistry Ten Year Series. Language wise is a bit difficult, but I do practise Chinese via Ten Year Series as well while reading Chinese fiction (a bit hard to get used to, but if you read a chinese translation to an english book you have already read before, you can pick up the phrasing while not constantly looking up the dictionary as you can infer the meanings). ^^
Ten year series for Humanities and English is not really that applicable as those are tested skills based so more practice in class/past year school papers would really help for those. ^^
For literature, sparknotes do help a lot in offering an alternative viewpoint but are not an alternative to annotation. Your daughter could sit down one day and just annotate her book according to perhaps characterization, plot, literary devices etc. If i'm not wrong, they're moving on to poems soon so she could practice annotating poems as well. ^^
Most people improve quite noticeably in the second semester as they use the June Holidays to clear up misconceptions, etc. ^^ I personally started with a GPA of 3.4 in Sem 1 and after mugging a bit more and finally realising that my honeymoon period is over, I pulled it up to a 3.72. So please don't be discouraged! Marks are also not indicative of your daughter's potential, but if you both feel that her marks do not reflect her abilities, she could speak with her teachers to find out the main reason why.

The Open House this yr was an eye opener since we visited last yr as well. This is the 1st time that RGS showed PSLE Range, Median and Mean (2010-2014 COP).
From free and easy, we took the guided tour this time round. Met up some of Yr 2 girls and they were truly RGS ambassadors. They made DD feel welcome and earnestly telling her to study hard for PSLE and looking forward to seeing her applying for DSA. Thru this tour, the girls shared their views. During the walk, the girls and DD took a pic together. This photo serves as a driving force to DD to go for greater heights.
