All About Kids' Gaming: Addiction, What Age Is Suitable, etc

My initial reaction was that how can an electronic book reader replaces books?!? Like radiantmom, I love the smell of new books and enjoy turning pages. It's like everytime I turn a page, I look forward to discovering where the author is going to bring me next in the plot.I just curious... for the parents that are completely against electronic gaming, what do you think of the e-book readers that are so hot these days, from Amazon's Kindle to... this:

Would you buy them?
But, lately, I'm reading Dan Brown's \"Lost Symbol\" and Stieg Larsson's \"The Girl who Kicked a Hornet's Nest\" and these books are heavy to lug around. So, have been wondering about the Kindle too. Saw an episode on Oprah Winfrey who was raving about the Kindle and now I'm curious !
Why, Chief! Is the Kindle going to be part of future Auction Wish List too?!?

Before you question the magic wish listings,
do ya have at least between 10k to 50k of
KPs yet?
Hey ppl, dun sidetrack too far hor... this is the
thread for the PSP-age-appropriate postings
not the Kindle.
Btw, Chief... if i remember correctly we have
an existing thread with regards to handheld
games before ya know.. and recently before
this thread there was another started by i
think Emelyn, on a question... are my kids
deprived.... something like that lah haa...
cannot remember exactly. Must check agn.
Mebbe we can merge threads since the nature
of the posts are similarly linked to one another?

would introducing electronic games like DS Lite, PSP and Wii to a 3yo be too young?
Playing on weekends - total an hour plus
would appreciate advise thanks
edit - main purpose - hand / eye coordination
brain game type ... -
1hr electronic game for 3 year old? I would be against it. Nothing against electronic games. My take is no need to expose them early - there are far more better & fun alternatives for kids at that age (everything is new to them at that age anyway), plus not good for their eyesight.
-
To me, there is never a suitable age for computer game. It is only wasting the child time. They can put the time into better use like going to the library or doing something else more meaningful.

agreed !
such device kills the EQ in a child. -
Goodness, at this age, I am against exposing the kid computer aided learning. Much less games.
Want to develop eye hand co-ordination, throw a ball for them to catch. Or do beads and bobbins treading or lego.
Brain game for a 3yrs old, give him jigsaw puzzles, sorting, patterning, matching. All these will also develop his motor skills.
I have seen and personally experienced. If the kids are exposed computers and electronic games too early, even educational games, they develop very short attention span. And they lose interest in books and authentic learning. -

Not only do I object to kids playing while at the dinning table and crossing roads I also feel the long hours of close proximity to the little screen is harmful to their eyes. I've seen kids playing while waiting for food in restaurants. Why do some parents allow that to happen? We already have very little time with them, why don't they spend the time chit-chatting with the kids instead?:salute: to buds

And :salute: to your girls! I'm very impressed by all the kids who don't get addicted to their handhelds.
For me, my objection stems from the fact that I keep seeing kids playing while WALKING (how do they do that?!), playing at the dining table, playing while their parents are talking to them, playing in the bath (ok, a bit extreme, but I witnessed that during a family holiday!) etc. It really freaks me out when I see my kids' cousins sitting in a row clicking away. -
The most unbearable thing to me is parents switch on the portable DVD player at the restaurant for their kid unusally around 2-5 yrs old so that the child can "concentrate" on the show and they themselves can concentrate in their chit-chating. This is the most unacceptable thing to me.
Sorry if I have offended anyone here but I just want to speak up my mind.
