Hi
Am thinking of switching my boy from i can read to lcentral.
Since he started on the I Can Read program first quarter of this year, after attending close to a year of its preliminary classes; my boy has been acting up severely each time his class starts for the past month or so, he has phobia of going to the ICR class and would freak out and vomit at the door step… no matter the amount of assurance and persuasion given…sigh, he whined that he finds it too boring or that he is afraid of the spelling ( although he does prepares for it reluctantly at home, he prefers to use memory than the phonemic skills being taught…sigh). Throughout the time, i have been really patient with him and controlling myself not to explode at him. He only settles down when his teacher comes out to "usher" him in with kind words and reassurances.
I feel that my boy is not able to accept well learning via conventional methods ( aka boring) as his kindergarten is those play concept ones and they do not have any spelling even at k2 and minimum writing but alot of fun and learning through games. This ICR reading prog does short passage reading and has weekly spelling (tho only a handful of words) during the class.
Is Lcentral more "fun" or as dry? I am afraid that my boy has develop a phobia for spelling and reading even before he starts primary one ?!??!! Any one can suggest what can be done to help my boy. thanks in advance!! -

Hi sesame2319,
So you mentioned your boy in K2? what is covered in his preliminary classes in ICR? Is your boy phobia against the lesson or the teacher? or his classmate?
Conventional method aka boring lesson in a way it is good to prepare your boy before Primary school, but the main concern now is to tackle his problem. If it is due to the class structure or the teacher's problem, changing school might help, if it is his own psychological aspect, changing school might not solve his problem, you need to identify the problem or just try your luck by changing school, maybe u can try to let him go for the assessment, see how open hearted he is towards new school / new teacher.
My boy is in Lift Off in Lcentral, so i personally think that his lessons are rather systematic, they are doing blending, decoding, passage reading (1 - 2 pages), weekly spelling of 10 words etc. It is not learning thru play, but learning phonics in a systematic ways.
